Republican President candidate Mitt Romney has like Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush before him has fully embarrassed their love of armed conflict to solve the worlds problems rather than using the more boring and completely long term use of diplomacy.
Mitt Romney: arm the Syrian rebels
Mitt Romney will call for an escalation of the conflict in Syria by arming rebels with the heavy weapons needed to confront president Bashar al-Assad's tanks, helicopters and fighter jets.
Romney is to make the proposal on Monday in what his campaign team has billed as a major foreign policy speech in Lexington, Virginia.
In extracts published in advance, he opened up the prospect, if he becomes president, of a US-Iranian proxy war being fought in Syria.
"Iran is sending arms to Assad because they know his downfall would be a strategic defeat for them. We should be working no less vigorously with our international partners to support the many Syrians who would deliver that defeat to Iran – rather than sitting on the sidelines," he said.
During the 1980's Ronald Reagan being the super anticommunist that he believed himself to be decided to fight the Red Tide in America's backyard. Thus was born the Iran Contra affair.
BackgroundContra militants based in Honduras waged a guerilla war to topple the then-Marxist government of Nicaragua.[15][16] The Contras' form of warfare was "one of consistent and bloody abuse of human rights, of murder, torture, mutilation, rape, arson, destruction and kidnapping."[17][18] The "Contras systematically engage in violent abuses... so prevalent that these may be said to be their principal means of waging war."[19] A Human Rights Watch report found that the Contras were guilty of targeting health care clinics and health care workers for assassination; kidnapping civilians; torturing and executing civilians, including children, who were captured in combat; raping women; indiscriminately attacking civilians and civilian homes; seizing civilian property; and burning civilian houses in captured towns.[20]Direct funding of the Contras insurgency had been made illegal through the Boland Amendment,[7] the name given to three U.S. legislative amendments between 1982 and 1984 aimed at limiting US government assistance to the Contras militants. In violation of the Boland Amendment, senior officials of the Reagan administration continued to secretly arm and train the Contras and provide arms to Iran, an operation they called "the Enterprise"
Arms sales to Iran
Michael Ledeen, a consultant of National Security Adviser Robert McFarlane, requested assistance from Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres for help in the sale of arms to Iran.[22][23] Having been designated a State Sponsor of Terrorism since January 1984;[24] Iran was in the midst of the Iran–Iraq War and could find few Western nations willing to supply it with weapons.[25] The idea behind the plan was for Israel to ship weapons through an intermediary (identified as Manucher Ghorbanifar)[2] to the Islamic republic as a way of aiding a supposedly moderate, politically influential faction within the regime of Ayatollah Khomeni who were believed to be seeking a rapprochement with the United States;[26] after the transaction, the U.S. would reimburse Israel with the same weapons, while receiving monetary benefits. The Israeli government required that the sale of arms meet high level approval from the United States government, and when McFarlane convinced them that the U.S. government approved the sale, Israel obliged by agreeing to sell the arms.
This intervention didn't lead to the overthrow of the Sandinista government of Nicaragua. At one point President Reagan giving a speech in Texas near the U.S. Mexican border stated that the Sandinista's would invade the U.S. using the advanced military vehicle known as the family sedan.
One can never forget the second Iraq war which according to the George W. Bush administration had developed a massive amount of weapons of mass destruction thanks to an informant known as Curve Ball who was nothing more than delusional and a very good liar.
The Iraq War was a conflict triggered by an invasion of Iraq by the United States[41][42] and the United Kingdom from March 20, 2003[43][44] to December 18, 2011,[45][46] though sectarian violence continues and has caused thousands of fatalities.
Prior to the war, the governments of the United States and the United Kingdom claimed that Iraq's alleged possession ofweapons of mass destruction (WMD) posed a threat to their security and that of their coalition/regional allies.[47][48][49] In 2002, the United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 1441 which called for Iraq to completely cooperate with UN weapon inspectors to verify that Iraq was not in possession of WMD and cruise missiles. Prior to the attack, the United Nations Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) found no evidence of WMD, but could not yet verify the accuracy of Iraq's declarations regarding what weapons it possessed, as their work was still unfinished. The leader of the inspectors Hans Blix estimated the time remaining for disarmament being verified through inspections to be "months".[50][51][52][53][54]After investigation following the invasion, the U.S.‑led Iraq Survey Group concluded that Iraq had ended its nuclear, chemical and biological programs in 1991 and had no active programs at the time of the invasion, but that they intended to resume production if the Iraq sanctions were lifted.[55] Although some degraded remnants of misplaced or abandoned chemical weapons from before 1991 were found, they were not the weapons which had been the one of the main arguments for the invasion.[56]
Naturally there were no weapons of mass destruction and there hadn't been any since the first Gulf War in 1991.
What does Mitt Romney hope to gain by intervening in Syria other than causing more death and destruction followed by complete failure. I'm sure Mitt "I know I'am George Patton" Romney will convince himself that none of that matters just as long as looks like a complete bullying ass.
