Government to pay $70m damages to 1,905 Manus detainees in class action

Refugees and asylum seekers awarded $70m plus costs for physical and mental injuries suffered in detention centre

The Australian government and its offshore detention contractors will pay more than $70m in compensation to nearly 2,000 refugees and asylum seekers for illegally detaining them in dangerous and damaging conditions on Manus Island.
The government on Wednesday settled a class action brought by Slater and Gordon on behalf of 1,905 refugees and asylum seekers detained on the island, rather than proceed with a six-month trial that would have involved evidence before the court from detainees of murder inside the detention centre, systemic sexual and physical abuse, and inadequate medical treatment leading to injury and death.
The detention centre was ruled “illegal and unconstitutional” by the PNG Supreme Court in April 2016. It remains operational, housing nearly 900 men, but is slated for closure in October this year.

On Donald Trump’s 71st birthday, 71 things he's said that may keep you up at night

From 'The leaks are real, but the news is fake' to 'No more massive injections. Tiny children are not horses'

Donald Trump is celebrating his 71st birthday on Wednesday. While it may not be a national holiday quite yet, it is his first since becoming President, and will undoubtedly be a special day for him.
People usually receive cakes on their birthdays, with their age mirrored by the number of candles. But with baked goods from the mainstream media unlikely to get past White House security these days, we can only offer the next best thing: a list of 71 things Trump has actually said – one for every year he has lived.
It would usually be difficult to compile so many memorable quotes from a President, but Trump has produced so many that it's actually difficult to whittle them down to just 71. And what's more, they keep on coming.

South Korea discovers drone spying on US anti-missile system

The suspected North Korean drone had captured hundreds of images, including 10 of the contentious defense system. The drone featured low-tech traits similar to drones discovered south of the demilitarized zone in 2014.

The South Korean military on Tuesday said a suspected North Korean drone took photographs of a US missile defense shield before crashing on its way back to the community country.
"We confirmed that it took about 10 photos" of an anti-missile system known as the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), deployed in the southeastern town of Seongju, a South Korean defense official told reports.
"Two missile launchers and the fire control radar of the system, which have already been deployed, were also included in the pictures," he added, noting that the camera had snapped hundreds of photographs.

Thousands of anti-government activists challenging President Vladimir Putin's rule were protesting across Russia on Monday, with police arresting main opposition leader Alexei Navalny outside his Moscow home before he could reach the main demonstration and scores of others.
Mr. Navalny's wife, Yulia, said on his Twitter feed that he was arrested about a half-hour before the Moscow demonstration was to begin. Police later confirmed the arrest, saying he could get up to 15 days in jail on charges of failing to follow police orders and violating public order.
Although city authorities had agreed to a location for the Moscow protest, Navalny called for it to be moved to Tverskaya Street, one of Moscow's main thoroughfares. He said contractors hired to build a stage at the agreed-upon venue could not do their work after apparently coming under official pressure.

ATTORNEY GENERAL Jeff Sessions, one of the first members of the Republican establishment to ally himself with then-candidate Donald Trump, appeared on Tuesday before the Senate Intelligence Committee. In his testimony, Sessions sought to staunch the increasingly rapid flow of embarrassing information from the Trump White House. The attorney general is near the center of multiple controversies dogging Trump. One is the firing of FBI Director James Comey, which Sessions recommended in a memo, for reasons that are still unclear. Another is contact between Sessions and Russian ambassador to Washington Sergei Kislyak, whom Sessions has variously claimed he did not meet with during the campaign, met with only twice, and now, perhaps, met with three times. The third alleged meeting with Kislyak, during a campaign event at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, was one of many important particulars that Sessions claimed he could not remember. He answered more than 20 questions with some version of “I don’t recall,” “I don’t recollect,” or “I don’t remember.”
