Here's How Breitbart And Milo Smuggled Nazi and White Nationalist Ideas Into The Mainstream
A cache of documents obtained by BuzzFeed News reveals the truth about Steve Bannon’s alt-right “killing machine.”Joseph Bernstein
In August, after a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville ended in murder, Steve Bannon insisted that "there's no room in American society" for neo-Nazis, neo-Confederates, and the KKK.
But an explosive cache of documents obtained by BuzzFeed News proves that there was plenty of room for those voices on his website.
During the 2016 presidential campaign, under Bannon’s leadership, Breitbart courted the alt-right — the insurgent, racist right-wing movement that helped sweep Donald Trump to power. The former White House chief strategist famously remarked that he wanted Breitbart to be “the platform for the alt-right.”
Cook Islands faces its 'worst case scenario', being granted developed country status
Government officials worry new status will result in a cut in aid and could hurt the country’s growth prospects
The tiny nation of the Cook Islands is set to become the first among the Pacific islands to graduate to “developed” status, in a move that some government officials are calling their “worst case scenario”.
Some 99.99% of the Cook’s territory is made up of ocean, with its 15 islands spread out over an area of nearly 2m sq km.
The Cook Islands has a free-association agreement with New Zealand, meaning it is self-governing but its residents are entitled to New Zealand citizenship, receive NZ$25m (£13.5m) in aid per annum and are expected to share common values.
The US and North Korea are stumbling into a second Cold War, whether they want to or not
During the Cuban Missile Crisis, Nikita Krushchev warned Kennedy not to pull too hard on the knot of war because 'a moment may come when that knot will be tied so tight that even he who tied it will not have the strength to untie it'David E Banks
Could a nuclear war between the United States and North Korea actually break out? As comforting as it is to think that responsible decision-makers could never allow this to happen, history suggests this might not be case.
At the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis, Nikita Krushchev reached out to Kennedy urging him not to pull too hard on the knot of war, “because the more the two of us pull, the tighter that knot will be tied. And a moment may come when that knot will be tied so tight that even he who tied it will not have the strength to untie it, and then it will be necessary to cut that knot, and what that would mean is not for me to explain to you.” How is possible that leaders can lose control like this?
The Ocampo AffairA Former ICC Chief's Dubious Links
Luis Moreno Ocampo hunted the world's worst war criminals and brought them to trial at the International Criminal Court. But internal documents show that he allowed himself to be exploited by a Libyan to protect him from investigation and that he took money from the billionaire.
By Sven Becker, Marian Blasberg and Dietmar PieperLuis Moreno Ocampo was wearing a shiny black academic gown when he took the oath as the first chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court at the Peace Palace in The Hague. He looked attractive, determined and sophisticated, like George Clooney playing the role of a law professor, when he raised his hand on June 16, 2003, solemnly swearing "to perform my duties in an honorable fashion and never to abuse my power as chief prosecutor."
The genocide in Rwanda and the massacre in Srebrenica had highlighted the need for a permanent international judiciary, and prompted the international community to approve the establishment of the International Criminal Court (ICC). The aim was to ensure that no war criminal would feel safe anymore, and to provide justice for the victims of bloody conflicts. Then United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan described the ICC as a "giant step forward in the march towards universal human rights." This was the hope Ocampo was to embody.
Barcelona braces for pro-unity rally
A huge crowd is expected to rally on Sunday in Barcelona against plans by Catalonia's separatist leaders to declare independence following a banned secession referendum.
The demonstration comes as Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy warned that he won't rule out suspending Catalonia's regional autonomy to stop them from declaring independence.
"The ideal would be not to have to take drastic measures," he said in an interview published in daily El Pais.
People are set to travel from across Spain to the Catalan capital for the rally which will be held exactly one week since the contested vote that has triggered Spain's worst political crisis in a generation.
The Barcelona protest -- organised by the Societat Civil Catalana, the main anti-independence group in Catalonia -- gets underway at noon (10H00 GMT).
Turkey forces clash with Tahrir al-Sham on Syria border
Turkish troops 'exchange heavy fire' with Syrian rebels near village of Kafr Lusin in Idlib province, monitor says.
Turkish forces have clashed with Hay'et Tahrir al-Sham fighters in Idlib province on the Syria-Turkey border, activists reported.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war monitor, said on Sunday that the Turkish troops exchanged heavy fire with the rebel alliance near the village of Kafr Lusin.
Rami Abdulrahman, head of the Observatory, told Al Jazeera that the rebels were sending reinforcements to the border area.
"Turkish forces are not on Syrian soil yet," Abdulrahman said, adding that army was firing artillery shells across the border, while the rebel alliance attacked a Turkish military base.
