Golden Globes 2018: Sexual harassment scandal dominates ceremony

Powerful speeches about Hollywood's sexual abuse scandal have dominated the 75th Golden Globe Awards.
It was the first major Hollywood awards ceremony since the film industry was hit by sexual harassment scandals, with stars wearing black to honour victims.
Oprah Winfrey summed up the mood, saying "a new day is on the horizon" as she collected an honorary award.
The big film winner of the night was Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which took home four awards.

It won the best film drama award, with its star Frances McDormand also picking up a trophy for best actress.

'Crazy numbers': civilian deaths from airstrikes almost double in a year

British involvement under scrutiny after study identifies 42% rise in number of civilians killed by explosives

More than 15,000 civilians were killed by explosive weapons in 2017, a jump of 42% in a year, according to a global survey seen by the Guardian.
The rise – driven by airstrikes, which killed almost double the number of civilians in 2017 compared with the previous year – coincided with US-led military operations to reclaim the Islamic State strongholds of Mosul, in Iraq, and Raqqa, in Syria.

MPs said the figures were “deeply concerning” and raised questions over the transparency of legal criteria used by the Ministry of Defence to determine whether an individual is an Isis combatant.

Donald Trump book: 25th Amendment to remove President 'discussed every day in the White House', author of exposé says

‘It’s not unreasonable to say this is 25th Amendment kind of stuff,’ Michael Wolff says

The author of the explosive new book on the Trump administration has claimed that “the 25th Amendment is a concept that is alive every day in the White House”.
Journalist Michael Wolff’s searing assessment of Donald Trump’spresidency has raised questions about the President’s fitness to serve, and prompted some to consider a “25th Amendment solution”. The amendment allows for the removal of a president if the vice president and a majority of the cabinet deem him physically or mentally unable to perform his duties.

Who is Kim Jong Un? Separating myth from fact

Updated 0456 GMT (1256 HKT) January 8, 2018
The little that is known about North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is, for the most part, questionable.

The year of his birth was supposedly changed to be more auspiciously aligned with that of his grandfather Kim Il Sung's, just as his father's had before him. He may or may not have three children. He may have an explosive temper, something his former girlfriend reportedly experienced during his school years in Switzerland.
Keen observers have said he's sick, and suffering from gout. They've said he's isolated and in danger of being overthrown, and that there are assassination plots against him. That he's weak and spoiled and surrounded by yes-men. It won't be long, defectors claim, before he's gone.

Turkey-based TV airs Egypt tapes on Jerusalem

A Turkey-based TV station has released audio recordings it said were of an Egyptian intelligence officer asking influential hosts in Egypt to persuade their viewers to accept a US decision to recogniseJerusalem as Israel's capital.
The recordings in Arabic, aired by the Mekameleen TV late on Sunday, were first reported on by the New York Times and appeared to contradict Egypt's public condemnation of the US move.
Mekameleen TV is an Istanbul-based free-to-air satellite television channel, run mostly by exiled Egyptians.

“BLACK MIRROR” REVEALS OUR FEAR OF ROBOTS AND ALGORITHMS WE CAN’T CONTROL

January 8 2018

THERE’S NO REAL plot in the “Metalhead” episode in the new season of “Black Mirror.” The star of the episode is a small, uncommunicative black robot that walks on all fours and is armed with a pistol stored in its front leg. Who controls the robot, if anyone, is never divulged. The four-legged mechanical creature operates seemingly on its own and for its own purposes. Over the course of the 40-minute episode, it hunts down a woman desperately fleeing through a forest, as she tries in vain to evade its sensors.
For those unfamiliar with the show, “Black Mirror” is a science fiction series on Netflix about a near-future in which new technologies reap terrible unintended consequences on our lives; they strip away personal independence, undermining our societal values and sometimes letting loose uncontrollable violence. As terrifying as they are, the technologies depicted in the show are not outlandish. Like the autonomous robot in “Metalhead,” they reflect easily conceivable, near-term advances upon currently existing technologies, such as drones.
