Six In The Morning Thursday February 22

Populism is eroding human rights across the world, says Amnesty International

The human rights watchdog has published its annual report, urging more human rights protections. Amnesty has warned that "hate-filled rhetoric" from US President Donald Trump and others has eroded human rights globally.
Human rights watchdog Amnesty International on Thursday published its annual report, warning of increased violations across the globe.
Amnesty International's David Griffiths told DW that they made a conscious choice to release the report in Washington, given "how President (Donald) Trump's hate-filled rhetoric has translated into reality."
"There are complex links between human rights abuses and social inequality," Griffiths added. "But one of the ways we see them connected is how many leaders have exploited people's fears about economic fragility in order to promote hatred and fear."

'A very scary movie': how China snatched Gui Minhai on the 11.10 train to Beijing

Revealed: details of the extraordinary detention of the Hong Kong bookseller as he sought help from Swedish diplomats

The 11.10am to Beijing left on time, gliding out of Shanghai’s cavernous high-speed rail terminal and darting north through the cheerless suburban sprawl.
On board the sleek, white bullet train sat an unlikely trio of Europeans, one of whom held the key to a real-life political thriller so frightening and tangled it has left all those trying to decipher it both gripped and unnerved.
Only two of the trio would make it to their final destination.
As the G126 hurtled towards the Chinese capital on 20 January, at speeds of up to 350km an hour, the latest dramatic chapter in a surreal two-year saga was about to unfold.

Nigeria military 'rescues 76 schoolgirls' after Boko Haram attack

The Nigerian military rescued 76 schoolgirls and recovered the bodies of two others on Wednesday, after the students went missing during a Boko Haram attack on a village, three parents, a resident and a local government official told Reuters.

"Everybody is celebrating their coming with songs and praises to God almighty," said Babagana Umar, one of the parents whose daughter had disappeared. "The only sad news is that two girls were dead and no explanation."
The rescued girls were returned to the village of Dapchi late on Wednesday evening, Umar and other residents said.

Haley: UN must end 'barbaric' attacks in Eastern Ghouta

Top UN officials condemn unrelenting bombardment of Syrian enclave as air attacks continue and death toll nears 300.
Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the UN, called on the Security Council to pass a draft resolution calling for a 30-day ceasefire in Eastern Ghouta, a besieged rebel enclave in Syria.
"It’s time to take immediate action in the hopes of saving the lives of the men, women, and children who are under attack by the barbaric Assad regime," Haley said in a statement on Wednesday.
The US diplomat called for the ceasefire to allow aid to be delivered to Ghouta.

Trump endorses guns for teachers to stop shootings

US President Donald Trump has said arming teachers could prevent school shootings like that which left 17 people dead last week in Florida.
A staff member with a gun could end an attack "very quickly", he said.
Mr Trump floated the proposal as emotional survivors of the 14 February massacre implored him to make sure something similar does not occur again.
The Republican president also backed calls for improved background checks on gun buyers.
Other survivors meanwhile lobbied Florida lawmakers on gun control.
