Florida school shooting: US investment giant leans on gun firms
The world's biggest investment management firm, BlackRock Inc, is stepping up pressure on companies that make and sell guns in response to the Florida school shooting.
It is considering excluding them from some of its portfolios and is asking how they monitor safe use of weapons.
The US corporation said the Florida shooting on 14 February, in which 17 people died, required a response.
Walmart and Dick's Sporting Goods announced curbs on gun sales earlier.
"As it has for many people, the recent tragedy in Florida has driven home for BlackRock the terrible toll from gun violence in America," the corporation said on its website.

Three children found living in wooden box in California desert
Children had been living there for years, according to authorities
A couple was charged with child abuse after authorities found their three children living in a wooden box in a southern California desert.
It appeared the children - aged 11, 13 and 14 - had been living in the plywood structure for about four years, the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department said, and were not being sufficiently fed. They were taken into custody by Children and Family Services.
Officials located the parents, Mona Kirk and Daniel Panico, on the property and arrested them. The pair pleaded not guilty to felony charges of child abuse, with Mr Panico expressing bewilderment about being prosecuted.

UN: War crimes likely committed in Syria's Eastern Ghouta
UN Human Rights chief Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein says perpetrators of 'these crimes' will be held to account.
The UN's human rights chief has warned that attacks on Syria's Eastern Ghouta probably amount to "war crimes" and that those behind the targeting of civilians will be held to account.
"I must emphasise that what we are seeing, in Eastern Ghouta and elsewhere in Syria, are likely war crimes, and potentially, crimes against humanity," Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein said at an emergency meeting of the UN Human Rights Council on Friday.
"The perpetrators of these crimes must know they are being identified; that dossiers are being built up with a view to their prosecution; and that they will be held accountable for what they have done," he added.
