Justice minister says she ordered Aum executions after 'careful consideration'

Today  04:15 pm JST

Japanese Justice Minister Yoko Kamikawa, who ordered the executions of Aum Shinrikyo cult founder Shoko Asahara and six of his followers, said Friday capital punishment is "unavoidable" for heinous crimes.
At a press conference hours after the executions, Kamikawa said she made the order after "careful consideration" because the death penalty is an extremely serious punishment that ends a person's life.
Kamikawa said she is aware of various opinions as to whether Japan should continue to have capital punishment.

Opinion: Beyond the trade war, US and China fight for economic supremacy

Trade frictions between the US and China are getting worse again with a fresh round of tariffs. Yet it's not just about trade, but something more fundamental, says economist Thomas Straubhaar.
Forget about the term "trade war." After all, we're not talking about electrical appliances or soybean deliveries. US tariffs on imports from China and retaliatory Chinese tariffs on agricultural products from the US are symbolic acts — good to attract media attention, and bad for the populations concerned.
The current trade conflict is only the most visible sign of a much bigger battle in the epochal race for power, domination and supremacy in the 21st century. What we're witnessing is the clash of two geopolitical giants, a clash between "America First" and "Made in China."
China: The US has started 'the biggest trade war' in history

The Trump administration's 25% tariffs are targeting more than 800 Chinese products worth $34 billion such as industrial machinery, medical devices and auto parts. They kicked in just after midnight ET, which is noon in Beijing.
China's tariffs on US goods came into effect immediately afterward, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said Friday.
"China is forced to strike back to safeguard core national interests and the interests of its people," the country's Commerce Ministry said in a statement. It accused the United States of "typical trade bullying."

Abiy Ahmed a 'painkiller, not a cure' for Ethiopia's problems

People in Ginchi town, where the first anti-government protests took place, hope the new PM will effect real change.
The people in the small town of Ginchi in central Oromia region are mostly farmers, earning their livelihood by working on land like most in Ethiopia.
Until about three years ago most Ethiopians had never heard of the town about two hours' drive west of the capital, Addis Ababa.
But the town of some 20,000 people is now part of history in this East African country for successfully organising protests against government land acquisition plan.

Precious 'Gollum's toad' on brink of extinction

A toad named after the character Gollum in the fantasy novel Lord of the Rings has joined the latest list of animals deemed at risk of extinction.
The amphibian lives not in the Misty Mountains, but on a Malaysian mountain.
The toad got its name from Gollum, also known as Sméagol, in Tolkien's trilogy because scientists saw similarities between the two.
"Smeagol from Lord of the Rings is a semi-aquatic creature," said Dr Chan Kin Onn of the University of Singapore.
"[It has] large eyes, occurs up in the mountains and has long thin limbs. And funnily enough his digits are also extended. These are all characters that this little stream-toad also has."
