Officials believe that a Christmas morning explosion in downtown Nashville that injured at least three people and damaged dozens of buildings was an intentional act.

In a brief news conference Friday morning, Metro Nashville Police spokesman Don Aaron said the department's hazardous devices unit was headed downtown in response to a call about a suspicious vehicle when there was a "significant" explosion linked to that vehicle around 6:30 a.m. CT.
"We do believe that the explosion was an intentional act," Aaron said.

Japan reports five cases of coronavirus variant found in UK

Cases emerge as Russia becomes latest country to tighten controls on travel from Britain

Five cases of the new coronavirus variant spreading fast across the UK have been found in Japan, and Russia has become the latest country to impose stricter quarantine on travellers from Britain.

Japan has avoided the huge infection numbers seen in countries from the US to Europe, but cases are rising sharply and daily numbers passed 3,000 for the first time this month.

The five people infected with the more highly transmissible form of Covid-19 had all recently arrived from the UK. They have been quarantined, Japanese media reported, and health officials are trying to trace their contacts and possible routes of infection.

Thousands of international lorry drivers are spending Christmas Day in their cabs at the English Channel border amid ongoing coronavirus chaos.

Some 1,100 soldiers have been deployed to Kent to help carry out coronavirus testing after French authorities agreed trucks could entry to the country if their drivers were found negative for Covid-19.

More than 700 trucks have been cleared for departure since that decision on Wednesday.

Central African Republic: Rebel groups call off three-day ceasefire as election looms

A rebel coalition that has been fighting the government in Central African Republic said Friday it was calling off a three-day ceasefire ahead of a tense general election on the weekend.

The Coalition of Patriots for Change (CPC), which began an offensive against the government a week ago, said in a statement it had "decided to break the 72-hour truce it had imposed on itself and resume its unrelenting march towards its final objective".

In the statement, which was confirmed to AFP as authentic by two of the six groups in the coalition, the CPC said that it made the decision "faced with "the irresponsible stubbornness of the government".

World's space achievements provide hope and glory during a stressful 2020

By Marcia Dunn

Astronauts blasted into orbit from the US for the first time in nearly a decade, three countries sent spacecraft hurtling toward Mars, and robotic explorers grabbed rocks from the moon and gravel from an asteroid for return to Earth.

Space provided moments of hope and glory in an otherwise difficult, stressful year.

It promises to do the same in 2021, with February’s landings at Mars and next northern fall’s planned launch of the Hubble Space Telescope’s successor — the next-generation James Webb Space Telescope

Rich countries buying most of the world's vaccine supply has left the rest 'scrambling for supplies,' campaigners say

Rich countries' success in buying up most of the vaccine supply have left the rest of the world "scrambling for supplies" as they try to protect their populations, campaigners say.

The world's wealthiest countries have reserved enough vaccines to allow them to inject their populations multiple times over, and have started administering shots.

The oversupply is a consequence of countries buying up multiple types of vaccine before it was clear which ones would work.
