UN nuclear watchdog fails to reach access deal with Iran

IAEA head says failure to gain renewed access to sites casts doubt over chances of restoring 2015 deal

 Diplomatic editor

The head of the UN’s nuclear watchdog has said he has failed to reach a deal with Iran over renewed access to key nuclear sites after talks in Tehran.

Rafael Grossi, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said the failure was seriously affecting the agency’s ability to do its work and the chances of a restoration of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

He told a press conference he was “close to the point when I will not be able to guarantee continuity of knowledge”, adding: “We must reach an agreement. We must do it.” No date has been set for a further meeting, although Grossi said he would continue to contact Iran.

FRANCE CALLS FOR WISH APP AND SITE TO BE BLOCKED

Popular online marketplace to be shadowbanned from internet in France

Several leading French politicians have called for search engines and app stores to hide the app and website of Wish following an investigation into the online marketplace.

Ministers Bruno Le Maire and Alain Griset, as well as France’s Secretary of State for the Digital Sector Cédric O, said in a joint statement that Wish had violated consumer rights by listing and selling products that were not compliant with European regulations.

More than 100 products sold on Wish were tracked as part of an investigation by the French administration in charge of consumer rights and fraud, with the findings revealing that more than half of the products were non-compliant, and a significant proportion were labelled as dangerous.

Ethiopia: Peace increasingly elusive as violence escalates

Growing pressure from the international community to end the violence is falling on deaf ears. As the conflict escalates, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed himself is now on the front lines to personally conduct war operations.

Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, a Nobel Peace Prize winner and former soldier, arrived on the front lines of the ongoing Tigray conflict on Tuesday as a government spokesperson officially announced Wednesday. No details have been given on his precise location

Abiy's decision is being widely interpreted as an attempt to mobilize Ethiopians in the fight against Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) forces.

"You could comment if it is wise or not, but it surely signifies a very serious situation in Ethiopia," Jan Abbink, a senior researcher at the African Studies Center at Leiden University in the Netherlands told DW.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida declared on Nov. 24 that Japan will release its state oil reserves for the first time ever in a bid to ease the soaring price of crude.

It came on the heels of the Biden administration’s announcement that the United States is tapping into its own emergency oil reserves, as part of a coordinated effort with Japan, China, India, South Korea and Britain to suppress rising prices.

“In tandem with the United States, we decided to sell a portion of the state oil reserves in a way that won’t infringe on the oil stockpiling law,” Kishida said.
