Israel inquiry to look into alleged police use of Pegasus spyware
Newspaper claims businesspeople, politicians, activists and Netanyahu’s son were targeted by phone intercepts
Israel’s police minister has announced the formation of a cabinet-level inquiry after a newspaper alleged that police had used powerful Pegasus spyware against a wide range of public figures including politicians from the left and right, businessmen, officials and activists.
Pegasus, a mobile phone hacking tool made by Israel’s NSO Group, was used to “phish for intelligence even before any investigation had been opened against the targets, and without judicial warrants”, Calcalist newspaper said in an unsourced report.
Among those allegedly identified as targets were the former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s son Avner and other members of his inner circle, including figures who have given evidence against Netanyahu in police investigations into corruption.
Slaughter of 450 trapped animals in Spain condemned as ‘orgy of death’
Seventy people paid €1,000 (£847) each to take part in the commercial hunting party
Almost 450 deer and wild boar have been killed in Spain in a day of commercial hunting condemned by ecologists as an “orgy of blood and death”.
The animals were penned in by fences, unable to escape the gunfire from the 70 participating hunters who were each charged €1,000 (£847) for the shoot, which took place on a private estate in Villaviciosa de Cordoba, in the Sierra Morena hills of Andalucia.
Such commercial hunting parties are legal under Spanish law, but ecologists and activists criticised the use of fences as unethical after images of the animals’ carcasses appeared online.

On eastern front line, Ukrainian troops live in constant fear of attack
As analysts continue to speculate on Russia's intentions regarding Ukraine, one scenario that Kyiv's defence experts find most plausible is an escalation in fighting in the Donbass region. Russian-backed separatists there claim the whole of Luhansk and Donetsk regions as their own. But in reality they control only part of them, having been pushed back by a Ukrainian army offensive in 2014. Our correspondent Gulliver Cragg travelled to Shchastya, a frontline town in the Ukrainian-held part of Luhansk region, where Ukrainian troops guard the strategically important Luhansk power station.
