Finland is on the verge of asking to join NATO. Here's why that's bad news for Putin

Updated 1520 GMT (2320 HKT) May 10, 2022

Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine has backfired on a number of fronts. But one of the most disastrous consequences of all for the Russian President is the increasingly likely prospect of Finland joining NATO.

The Nordic nation is expected to announce its interest in NATO membership as soon as this week after its Foreign Affairs Committee drafts a response to the government's security report -- which includes the option of joining the alliance. After that, the Finnish parliament will hold an extraordinary debate on whether to approve the security report recommendations.
At this point it is very likely NATO would invite the country to talk about accession to the alliance.

Sri Lanka troops rescue ex-PM as houses torched in deadly night of unrest

Mahinda Rajapaksa rescued in pre-dawn military operation after day of protests in which five people were killed

 South Asia correspondent

Sri Lankan troops have conducted a dramatic pre-dawn operation to rescue Mahinda Rajapaksa – who resigned as prime minister on Monday – firing warning shots in the air to disperse thousands of anti-government protesters who had stormed his official residence in Colombo.

Five people were killed and nearly 200 wounded on Monday in the worst violence in weeks of protests over an unprecedented economic crisis. Demonstrations continued on Tuesday as hundreds of anti-government protesters defied a nationwide curfew, gathering in the streets of Colombo and shouting slogans outside the office of the president, Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Mahinda Rajapaksa, who is the president’s brother, had reluctantly stepped down in a bid to placate the protesters who have accused the government of mishandling the economy and bankrupting the country, but his resignation did little to calm public anger.

Russian officials had previously denied that the colonel, who served in a motorised rifle unit, had been killed.

Why do humans eat so much meat?

We know the current meat and dairy industry are harming our planet and that eating too much animal protein can even be bad for our health. So why do humans continue eating meat?

Humans have been eating meat since the prehistoric age, consuming ever more of it as time has worn on. Over the past 50 years alone, we have quadrupled global production to roughly 350 million tons annually, according to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO).

And the trend shows no sign of abating.  Current predictions suggest we will be producing up to 455 million tons a year by 2050.

‘Crazy rich’ Indonesians’ arrests spotlight investment perils

Case against designer watch-toting influencers highlights opaque world of online trading apps in Indonesia.

Indonesian influencers Indra Kesuma and Doni Salmanan lived the kind of lives most people can only dream of.

On his now-deleted Instagram, 25-year-old Kesuma, aka Indra Kenz, regularly posted pictures of himself posing next to luxury cars and sporting designer watches and clothes.

During an appearance on the TV show, Crazy Rich Indonesia, in January, Kesuma, from Medan in North Sumatra, regaled the audience with stories of buying $30,000 T-shirts, while Bandung-based Salmanan, 23, bragged of gifting $100,000 to an online gamer simply because he had nothing better to do.
