Red Cross says destruction in Ukraine "defies comprehension" after 100 days of war

From CNN's Sharon Braithwaite in London

The International Committee of the Red Cross said on Friday the scale of the destruction in Ukraine due to Russia's invasion “defies comprehension.”

In a statement on the impact of 100 days of the war in Ukraine on civilians, ICRC’s Director-General Robert Mardini said that "it would be hard to exaggerate the toll that the international armed conflict in Ukraine has had on civilians over the last 100 days."

"The scale of destruction in cities defies comprehension. Homes, schools and hospitals have been destroyed and civilians have suffered the horrors of conflict, with lives lost and families torn apart,” he said.

Car tyres produce vastly more particle pollution than exhausts, tests show

Toxic particles from tyre wear almost 2,000 times worse than from exhausts as weight of cars increases

 Environment editor

Almost 2,000 times more particle pollution is produced by tyre wear than is pumped out of the exhausts of modern cars, tests have shown.

The tyre particles pollute air, water and soil and contain a wide range of toxic organic compounds, including known carcinogens, the analysts say, suggesting tyre pollution could rapidly become a major issue for regulators.

Air pollution causes millions of early deaths a year globally. The requirement for better filters has meant particle emissions from tailpipes in developed countries are now much lower in new cars, with those in Europe far below the legal limit. However, the increasing weight of cars means more particles are being thrown off by tyres as they wear on the road.

These images show the damage done to the Chernoybyl nuclear plant after Russian forces seized the plant in the early days of the Ukraine war.

The site of one of world’s worst nuclear disasters was swiftly taken by Vladimir Putin’s troops at the start of the invasion of Ukraine in February.

Russian troops occupied the site - that has a 19-mile exclusion zone - for five weeks and now for the first time photographers have had access to the abandoned site and documented the trail of destruction left by soldiers.

India decries ‘biased’ US report on religious freedom

India defends its record on religious tolerance after US report accused officials of supporting attacks on minority worshippers.

India has defended its record on religious tolerance and rebuked the United States for its own rights issues after a report accused Indian officials of supporting attacks on minority worshippers.

Washington’s annual report on religious freedom around the world contained a rare – if indirect – criticism of New Delhi, its emerging ally, on Thursday, documenting incendiary comments by Indian public officials and accounts of discrimination against Muslims and Christians in India.

New Delhi’s foreign ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi said on Friday that senior US officials had made “ill-informed” and “biased” comments coinciding with the report’s release.
