Mariupol survivor: My young children asked me if it hurts to die

A 28-year-old mother recounts her harrowing ordeal in Mariupol, where she was surrounded by death and destruction.

Halyna, a 28-year-old woman from the southern Ukrainian city of Mariupol, survived three weeks of Russian shelling with her husband, two young children and dog.

She is currently in Europe, but Al Jazeera is withholding her last name and any other details which could identify her, because her relatives are still in the Russia-occupied city.

Here is her story, in her words:

“We woke because the explosions were so powerful. The windows began shattering and we understood right away that the war has began.

South Africa seeking to extradite Gupta brothers after arrest in Dubai

Police begin process to transport Indian-born pair wanted on criminal and money-laundering charges

 in Johannesburg

Police in Dubai are coordinating with their South African counterparts to secure the extradition of two wealthy Indian-born brothers wanted by South African authorities on criminal and money-laundering charges who were arrested in the emirate on Monday.

Atul and Rajesh Gupta are accused of paying bribes in exchange for lucrative state contracts and influence over ministerial appointments during the chaotic nine-year presidency of Jacob Zuma, which ended amid allegations of systematic corruption in 2018. The brothers fled to Dubai shortly after Zuma’s fall from power.

In a statement, Dubai police said they were acting on a red arrest notice received from Interpol and coordinating with South African counterparts to secure the extradition of the two men.

Syria: Leaked video exposes Assad killing machine

A leaked six-minute video shows the massacre of 41 people in Damascus. The perpetrators have been identified to be Assad forces.

In late April 2022, a Syrian defector leaked a video of the Tadamon massacre. Hundreds of Syrian families watched the clip, hoping to learn what had happened to their missing sons.

The Siyam family watched it, too. Their son, Waseem Siyam, left his home in Damascus in the early morning of April 142013. He had been ordered by the government to deliver flour to a state-run bakery in the city's southern Tadamon neighborhood. The 34-year-old never returned from what should have been a routine task.

Paris shooting thrusts police violence into the spotlight as French legislative elections loom

A fatal police shooting in Paris has thrust the issue of violence by security forces to the heart of an increasingly close French parliamentary election battle between a new left-wing coalition and allies of centrist President Emmanuel Macron.

Police killed a passenger in a car in northern Paris on Saturday after the vehicle failed to stop when summoned by officers and then allegedly drove towards them at speed.

“If you vote for me, I’ll change the doctrine governing the use of force by the police in our country,” Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the Nupes left-wing alliance, told France Inter radio on Tuesday.

Hong Kong pro-democracy figures set for largest national security trial

Hong Kong's largest national security case was sent to trial on Tuesday, after lingering 15 months in pre-trial procedures during which most of the 47 defendants were denied bail.

Under the security law, which Beijing imposed in 2020 following huge, sometimes violent democracy protests, the pro-democracy figures are charged with "conspiracy to subversion" for organizing an unofficial primary election.

Subversion is one of the four major crimes under the security law and can carry a punishment of up to life in prison.

South Korea and the United States put on an aerial show of force to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Tuesday, flying 20 fighter jets over waters west of the Korean Peninsula in response to Pyongyang's recent missile tests.

The allies sent the jets -- South Korean F-35A, F-15K and FK-16 fighters and US F-16s -- over the Yellow Sea, known as the West Sea in South Korea, on Tuesday morning following North Korea's launch of eight short-range ballistic missiles on Sunday.
