Updated 9:39 AM EDT, Sat October 1, 2022

Ukrainian forces are encircling Russian troops in Russian-occupied Lyman, in the Kramatorsk district of Donetsk, despite Moscow’s annexation of the region that’s been declared illegal by the West.

Ukrainian forces have entered Stavky, a village neighboring Lyman, according to Serhii Cherevatyi, the military spokesperson for the eastern grouping of Ukrainian forces.

“The Russian group in the area of Lyman is surrounded. The settlements of Yampil, Novoselivka, Shandryholove, Drobysheve, and Stavky are liberated. Stabilization measures are ongoing there,” Cherevatyi said in a televised press conference on Saturday.

Worldwide protests are being held in solidarity with the growing uprising in Iran demanding greater freedom and protesting against the death of Mahsa Amini following her arrest by Iranian morality police.

Demonstrations under the slogan “Women, life, liberty” are taking place in many major cities, including Rome, Zurich, Paris, London, Seoul, Auckland, Melbourne, Sydney, Stockholm and New York.

Efforts were also under way inside Iran on Saturday to launch a national strike, mainly in the country’s Kurdish cities, as well as the non-payment of taxes to the government.

Afghan women protest Hazara 'genocide' after Kabul bombing

The protesters claimed that a recent suicide bombing in Kabul was specifically meant to target girls of the historically oppressed Hazara community. The UN says 35 were killed and 82 wounded.

Dozens of women took to the streets of Kabul on Saturday to protest against what they called the "genocide" of the Shiite Hazara community. The protest comes a day after a suicide attacker blew himself up in a Kabul study hall.

Hundreds of students — largely women of the Hazara ethnic group — were taking tests in preparation for their university exams in the city's Dasht-e-Barchi area when the suicide bombing occurred. The community is a historically persecuted and oppressed group that has been targeted in other fatal attacks in Afghanistan.

Burkina Faso hit by fresh uncertainty after second coup in eight months

Burkina Faso awoke to fresh chaos Saturday, with the country facing its second coup in a year. Junta leader Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba was toppled by junior officers who accused him of failing to address the numerous jihadist attacks on the impoverished and restive West African nation.

Shops have begun to open and traffic is resuming, but the presence of soldiers in armoured vehicles and pickup trucks can be felt in certain parts of this sprawling city.

The Economic Community of West African States regional bloc "condemned in the strongest possible terms" the latest seizure of power, calling it "inappropriate" at a time when real progress was being made towards constitutional order by July 1, 2024.

The ruling Liberal Democratic Party released more details on damaging revelations of ties between its lawmakers and the Unification Church that have called the partys integrity into question, given the extent of their involvement and the prominent individuals named to date.

But it appeared doubtful the move would placate opposition forces who are expected to go on the attack against the government when an extraordinary Diet session is scheduled to convene on Oct. 3.

The issue of ties between LDP lawmakers and the organization formally known as the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification has dominated news coverage since the July 8 slaying of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Ukraine war: Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant chief detained by Russians - Kyiv

Russian troops have detained the director of Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Ukraine's state nuclear regulator Enerhoatom says.

It says Ihor Murashov was held as his car was on its way from the facility to the nearby town of Enerhodar at about 16:00 local time (13:00 GMT) on Friday.

He was then blindfolded and is believed to have been taken to a prison facility in Enerhodar, Enerhoatom's president told the BBC.

Russia has not commented.

Moscow seized Europe's biggest nuclear plant in March, and kept on its Ukrainian staff.
