Russia had no choice but to flee Kherson, says Ukraine
The Dnipro river runs straight through the city of Kherson in southern Ukraine and acts as a lifeline to the middle of the country.
It's a strategically important channel for transporting supplies through Ukraine with many other major cities, including Kyiv, on the banks of the river.
Russia had used the river to move thousands of civilians out of the city by boat before the military withdrawal.
Recently, Ukrainian troops have bombed bridges to slow down Russia's supply lines which will also hinder the withdrawal as thousands of Russian troops must try and across the river.
Summary
- The head of the Ukrainian armed forces says Russian troops were left with no other option but to flee the southern city of Kherson
- General Zaluzhny says his forces have destroyed Russian supply lines and disrupted command and control systems there
- Kherson is the only regional capital Russia has captured since the invasion began in February - losing it is a significant blow
- Moscow's commander in Ukraine announced the withdrawal on Wednesday saying it wasn't possible to continue supplying the city
- Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky says his country is moving "very carefully" in response to the announcement
- The US estimates that around 100,000 Russian and 100,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed or injured since the war began
World Cup stadium workers ‘had their money stolen and lives ruined’, says rights group
Report on conditions in Qatar alleges labour abuses are widespread and calls on Fifa to set up compensation fund
Migrant workers who constructed stadiums for the World Cup in Qatar have endured “persistent and widespread labour rights violations”, which include nationality-based discrimination, illegal recruitment practices and, in some cases, unpaid wages, according to allegations in a new report by human rights group Equidem.
While the report also documents a number of cases of good practice, including “adequate channels for reporting concerns with working conditions”, good access to healthcare, satisfactory safety measures and decent living conditions, Equidem’s findings conclude that Qatar has been a “hostile environment” for stadium workers.
It claims that many of the workers interviewed for its report faced severe exploitation and were forced to work in a culture of fear and retribution, “sustained through nationality-based discrimination and workplace violence, including physical, verbal, and mental abuse”.
KFC 'very sorry' for Germany's Reichspogromnacht promotion
The fast food chain had sent a notification encouraging customers to "treat themselves" with fried chicken on the anniversary of the 1938 Nazi pogrom. It later blamed a technical error.

"Commemoration of Kristallnacht — Treat yourself to more soft cheese and crispy chicken. Now at KFCheese!," read the message sent on Wednesday.
Around an hour later, KFC sent another notification blaming the first message on "an error in our system."
Meet the young Congolese joining up to fight the M23 rebel group
Hundreds of young people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are flocking to army recruiting centres and signing up after their president Felix Tshiesekedi called on the nation’s youth to help halt the advance of the March 23 Movement, a rebel military group that has been terrorising the eastern province of North Kivu. Our team spoke to one of these volunteers.
The M23 rebel group, which opposes the Congolese government, was first active in the eastern province of North Kivu a decade ago. Made up mostly of people from the Tutsi ethnic group, the rebel force is thought to have links to neighbouring Rwanda.
The group launched a new offensive on October 20 of this year, capturing several towns in North Kivu, including Rutshuru Centre and Kiwanja. The Congolese Army admitted to abandoning their positions during the offensive, to avoid “causing unnecessary deaths", amongst the population. On November 8, the Congolese Army bombed M23 positions, according to journalists on the ground.

The Fight for the AmazonOngoing Deforestation in Brazil a Huge Challenge for Lula and the World
The Brazilian state of Acre in the Amazon rainforest region was once considered a model of environmentalism. Under Bolsonaro, though, deforestation accelerated. Can the country's new president get things back on track?
By Jens Glüsing in Acre, Brazil
It is on the shoulders of men like Marinildo Nascimento de Brito, 39, that the fate of the world's largest rainforest rests. The small farmer lives with his wife and two daughters in the Reserva Extrativista Chico Mendes, a nature preserve in the Brazilian state of Acre, located in the Amazon region. Like his parents before him, he taps caoutchouc and collects Brazil nuts, which fall from majestic castanheiras, a tree that has become the symbol of the Amazon in Brazil.
The drive from the provincial capital of Rio Branco to Nascimento de Brito’s home takes three hours. The sign marking the boundary of the protected area is charred, with only the posts still standing. The route leads along dusty forest tracks, with cattle grazing among tree stumps, some of which are smoldering. The ashen-gray skeletons of castanheiras jut into the sky like claws, the ground beneath them blackened by soot. Smoke is rising from a fire that appears to have been set just a few hours earlier.
