Missing Titanic sub has 20 hours of oxygen left - Coast Guard

Two hours to prepare the Victor 6000

Science correspondent

We heard this afternoon about the arrival of a French underwater Robotically Operated Vehicle (ROV), the Victor 6000.

Its role will be to search for the Titan and to remove any obstacles that are stopping it from floating to the surface.

It will take two hours to prepare the ROV once it arrives and the operation is likely to take several more hours – and time is not on the side of a rescue operation.

But the head of the organisation that operates the Victor 6,000, Jan Opderbecke, of the French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea, told BBC News that “where there is still hope, we have to try”.

Guards at Del Monte pineapple farm in Kenya accused of killings

Exclusive: Investigation uncovers villagers’ claims of violence at farm that is single largest exporter of Kenyan produce to the world

Security guards at a Del Monte pineapple farm in Kenya that supplies most British supermarkets have been accused of brutally assaulting and killing people suspected of trespassing on its land.

A joint investigation by the Guardian and the Bureau of Investigative Journalism (TBIJ) has uncovered claims from villagers of violence by guards at the plantation in the last four years.

The vast plantation, which is estimated to cover at least 40 sq km, the area of a small city, is about an hour’s drive from the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. The farm has public roads going through it and directly employs 237 security guards.

7 Pakistanis arrested for alleged key role in migrant ship that sank off Greece, leaving 500 missing

Pakistani authorities say they have arrested seven alleged key figures in a human trafficking ring following last week’s sinking of a vessel packed with migrants off Greece

Munir Ahmed

Pakistani authorities said Wednesday they have arrested seven alleged key figures in a human trafficking ring following last week's sinking of an overcrowded smuggling vessel off Greece that left more than 500 migrants missing, including Pakistanis.

Police told The Associated Press that the ring was engaged in smuggling Pakistanis into Europe and that the arrests took place over the last two days, as part of a government crackdown on traffickers.

Thirty other suspects were arrested over the past few days in Pakistan and were being questioned for their role in facilitating smuggling activities.

Chinese air carrier group sails through Taiwan Strait

Amid heightened tensions over the sovereignty of the island, Taipei's Defense Ministry said the Shandong aircraft carrier's movements were being "monitored."

China's Shandong aircraft carrier led a group of warships through the Taiwan Strait on Wednesday, Taiwan's Defense Ministry said.

Amid heightened tensions over the island China claims as its own, Taiwan's Defense Ministry said the Shandong, commissioned in 2019, had traveled in a southerly direction through the western part of the strait. In response to the move, the ministry said it had sent "appropriate forces" to monitor the activities.

France outlaws climate activist group involved in protest against agro industry reservoirs

The French government issued a decree Wednesday outlawing an activist climate group it accuses of fomenting violence in a series of recent demonstrations, including one that saw fierce clashes with police over an irrigation project.

Uprisings of the Earth (SLT) condemned the shutdown and has called for protests in dozens of cities across France starting Wednesday.

"Under the claim of defending the preservation of the environment... (SLT) encourages sabotage and property damage, including with violence," Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said after a cabinet meeting.

SLT is part of a new wave of more radical climate activist groups, including Extinction Rebellion, that say direct action is needed in response to insufficient efforts to combat climate change and global warming.

The dissolution procedure for SLT was launched in March after around 5,000 protesters battled with more than 3,000 police officers during a protest against a giant irrigation reservoir near Sainte-Soline in western France.

Ukrainian pilots plead for F-16s as they battle Russian air superiority

Two Ukrainian jets roar just above the trees, flying in formation as they make their way towards the front lines of Ukraine’s counteroffensive.

The Soviet-era Su-25s glide slowly, loudly, spewing thick black smoke as they go. They seem to hug the ground — flying as low as possible to avoid Russian radars, air defenses and more importantly, enemy jets.

The Su-25s are ancient aircraft, first introduced in the 1980s, and they’re no match for Russia’s Su-35s and their advanced radars and long range missiles.

“We lose many aircraft to these interceptors,” says Su-25 pilot Oleksyi, who goes by the callsign “Pumba.” He knows all too well the uphill battle he and his colleagues face, having lost many of his comrades since Russia’s full-scale invasion began a year and a half ago.
