Borrell calls for independent probe on Nuseirat attack
The EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, says the Israeli attack on a UN-run school in Nuseirat refugee camp “must be independently investigated, in line with the last ICJ [International Court of Justice] order”.
“Reports coming from Gaza time and again show that violence and suffering are still the only reality for hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians,” he said on X. “An enduring ceasefire is the only way forward to protect civilians and get to the immediate release of all hostages.”
- The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) says as seasonal heat takes hold in the Gaza Strip and a lack of clean water persists, “there is a real concern that cholera may become prevalent”.
- In a statement, the United States and 16 allied countries say they “fully support” the ceasefire and captives’ release deal outlined by US President Joe Biden on May 31.
- Gaza’s Health Ministry says 68 Palestinians were killed and 235 wounded in the past 24 hours.
- At least 40 people have been killed and dozens wounded in an Israeli attack on a school sheltering displaced people and houses in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. The Israeli military has confirmed that its fighter jets targeted a UNRWA school in the area.
‘I have never taken his sacrifice for granted’: D-day veterans honour comrades in Normandy
Servicemen and women involved in landings joined by royals and politicians at 80th anniversary commemorations
It was not the profound silence of the moment of reflection, broken only by gentle birdsong, or even the spectacular sweeping flypast from the Red Arrows that left deep red, blue and white trails hanging in the almost cloudless sky, that most stirred the thousand people honouring the events of 80 years ago among the brilliant white French Massangis stone of the British Normandy memorial.
It was instead the words of Arthur Oborne, 100, which brought people to their feet in a spontaneous show of gratitude and sorrow over the burdens borne and lives prematurely ended by what King Charles had described as “the vast allied effort” launched on 6 June 1944.
Standing at the centre of the memorial site, opened in 2021 near the village of Ver-sur-Mer and overlooking Gold beach, Oborne, working hard to keep his voice strong and clear, recalled being shot in the lung by a sniper.
Sudan: 'Up to 100' killed in RSF attack on village
Scores have been killed in a paramilitary attack on a village in Gezira state, a pro-democracy group said. Thousands have died and almost 9 million have been displaced since the start of the conflict.
An attack on a village in central Sudan has killed "up to 100" people, a pro-democracy activist group said on Thursday.
The Madani Resistance Committee said that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) attacked the village of Wad al-Noura in the state of Gezira "in two waves."
The RSF began fighting with the Sudanese army led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan in April 2023 over a dispute regarding the planned integration of the paramilitary into the country's regular armed forces.
Thousands have died and almost 9 million have been displaced since the start of the conflict. Last month, the UN warned that 5 million people were at risk of famine.
Indians have raised ‘a voice for democracy’ online and in the polls in historic vote
Despite the heightened anxieties over the conduct of a free and fair election, India’s democracy rallied in the 2024 election, with voters denying Prime Minister Narendra Modi a landslide win. Much of the fight occurred online as independent journalists and influencers challenged the government narrative echoed on mainstream media.
The night before the 2024 Indian election results were to be announced, Dhruv Rathee released a “final message” YouTube video that was a cry from the heart.
The 29-year-old vlogger and social media activist is a cyber sensation in India, adored by his fans, reviled by his detractors, and acknowledged as one of Time magazine’s 2023 Next Generation Leaders. During the mammoth, six-week election this year, Rathee emerged as a powerful voice of dissent against Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist policies and the democratic backsliding the prime minister spearheaded for a decade.
As India awaited the Modi “landslide” victory – as the mainstream media exit polls had forecast – Rathee’s 25-minute video, released late Monday, sounded like the last words of a man facing the gallows.

However, Suzuki also reiterated the prefecture's commitment to balancing the project with the conservation of water resources and the preservation of the Southern Alps ecosystem.
The humble heroes who kept their tales of war to themselves

Ronnie Fraser’s father, Ralph, never spoke about D-Day until he watched the commemorations for the 70th anniversary 10 years ago.
Ralph had fled Nazi Germany in 1939, along with several members of his family. He was 19 when he landed as a refugee and was interned as an “enemy alien” (a citizen of one country living in another country it is at war with), before being sent to Canada along with his younger brother.
He was then offered the chance to return to Britain and serve in the Army, and in June 1942 he joined the Pioneer Corps - a regiment predominantly composed of Jewish refugees.
“He was always grateful Britain took him in as a refugee, and proud to have served in the Army. His proudest moment was the day he received his British passport,” his son recalls in an interview with the BBC.
