The sister-in-law of hostage Shiri Bibas said the family is "not seeking revenge right now" and called for her return from Gaza after Israel said Hamas had released the body of an unidentified woman.

Ofri Bibas Levy said in a statement that the family could not mourn Shiri's sons, whose bodies were handed over, until their mother is returned.

Israel accused Hamas of violating the ceasefire after forensic testing revealed the body returned on Thursday was not Shiri.

International aid groups axe thousands of jobs in wake of Trump funding freeze

Fears that cuts will ‘decimate’ ability to react to crises as sector loses expertise and skills at every level, report finds

Fri 21 Feb 2025 11.06 GMT

Some of the world’s largest aid organisations are axing thousands of jobs as a result of US president Donald Trump’s freeze on overseas aid, potentially “decimating” the sector’s ability to react to future crises.

Those that have already announced job cuts include the International Rescue Committee, Danish Refugee Council, Norwegian Refugee Council and war zone-focused Norwegian People’s Aid.

Catholic Relief Services has also warned staff to expect losses and there is concern among workers at Save the Children, whose US wing was more than half-funded by the government agency USAid, that cuts could lie ahead.

German election: Parties into final stretch before voting

As Sunday’s snap general election fast approaches Germans face another multi-party coalition as a series of global and domestic issues loom large. DW has more.

Germany warns of Russian disinformation and election interference

Germany’s Interior Ministry has warned of a Russian disinformation operation seeking to influence voters and help the far-right Alternative for Germany party (AfD).

Ministry spokesperson Maximilian Kall said security officials had reason to suspect the Kremlin-linked "Storm-1516" network was behind some of the online campaigns.

Disinformation researchers say the network has previously produced fake videos to discredit the US election campaign of Kamala Harris, who was defeated by Donald Trump in the 2024 US presidential election.

Hong Kong’s largest pro-democracy party took an initial step toward dissolving Thursday, in the latest sign of the Chinese territory's narrowing space for civil society groups following Beijing's crackdown on dissent.

The Democratic Party's central committee decided to set up a task force to look into the procedures involved in dissolving the party. A final decision would require approval of the party's members.

Party chairperson Lo Kin Hei said at a news conference late Thursday that party leaders made the decision based the current political situation and social climate, and said the party did not have any acute financial burdens.

Are white Afrikaners at risk in South Africa? Not really, most say

As Trump offers to take in Afrikaner refugees, many say right-wing lobbyists have spread misinformation and fear.

On a rainy Saturday in South Africa’s capital Pretoria, several hundred white Afrikaners gathered outside the embassy of the United States.

“President Trump and Elon Musk, please help the farmers chase away the [African National Congress] ANC takeover of South Africa,” read a large banner hoisted above the crowd gathered to “thank” the US president for championing their cause against their government.

The Ukraine minerals deal is a perfect metaphor for Trump’s foreign policy

Donald Trump isn’t the only president who knows a bad deal when he sees one.

Volodymyr Zelensky’s refusal to sign away nearly half of his country’s rare earth minerals for very few future guarantees is one of many reasons why Trump has been driven into a rage at his counterpart in Kyiv.

The Ukrainian president has made clear that exploiting his country’s precious geographical and energy resources will be one way to rebuild its economy and cities after the eventual end of the war. But the offer tendered by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, while being lauded by US officials as a generous ladder to prosperity for Ukraine, is not really a “deal” at all.
