Tensions escalate as Pakistan vows response to Indian strikes after Pahalgam killings

Summary

  • Tensions escalate in India and Pakistan, after India launches missile strikes in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir

  • Pakistan says six locations were attacked and PM Shehbaz Sharif says five Indian jets were downed

  • India has not confirmed the downing of the jets - BBC Verify has looked at footage purporting to show pieces of debris from Indian aircraft

  • Pakistan says 26 people have been killed and 46 injured by air strikes and firing along the Line of Control

  • Meanwhile, India's army says at least 15 civilians were killed by Pakistani shelling on its side of the de facto border

  • India says the missile strikes are in response to a deadly militant attack on Indian tourists in Pahalgam last month

  • Indian-administered Kashmir has seen a decades-long insurgency which has claimed thousands of lives. India and Pakistan both claim Kashmir in full

India's ruling party says 'nobody wants war'

We’ve just heard from Nalin Kohli, the national spokesman for India's governing party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who defended the strikes.

"Nobody wants a war," he tells the BBC World Service's Newshour programme.

But, he adds, India will not “stay away from protecting [the] rights” of its citizens and “ensuring that Indian blood is not spilled…in a power game, based on a network that supports terrorists or breeds terrorists”.

He says India only struck sites that he claims are "directly associated with terrorist groups", and did not target "anything to do with the Pakistani military".

Israeli attacks kill more than 60 as Gaza blockade accelerates starvation

Separate attacks targeting a restaurant and a school in Gaza City kill dozens.

Israel’s attacks on Gaza have killed at least 61 people since dawn, targeting civilians in crowded places, as its more than two-month blockade of the besieged and bombarded enclave has caused acute food shortages, accelerating the starvation of the Palestinian population.

A reconnaissance drone strike targeted an area near the Thai and Palmyra restaurants in al-Wehda Street, in Gaza City. Two missiles were fired at two locations at the same time, 100 metres apart, one inside a restaurant and another at the intersection, killing at least 17 people.

The Trump administration is planning to deport a group of migrants to Libya, according to reports, despite the state department’s previous condemnation of the “life-threatening” prison conditions in the country.

Libya’s provisional government has denied the reports.

Reuters cited three unnamed US officials as saying the deportations could happen this week. Two of the officials said the individuals, whose nationalities are not known, could fly to the north African country as soon as Wednesday, but they added the plans could still change. The New York Times also cited a US official confirming the deportation plans.

Mali's military junta suspends political parties' activities 'until further notice'

Mali’s military leadership suspended political parties' activities “until further notice”, state television announced on Wednesday, following rare protests last weekend that drew hundreds of demonstrators demanding a return to constitutional order.

Mali's junta on Wednesday suspended political parties' activities "until further notice for reasons of public order", as the opposition protests against the military government's ramped-up crackdown on dissent.

Read out on national television and radio, the decree comes ahead of a rally called for Friday by parties critical of the junta against their dissolution, as well as for a return to constitutional order in the insecurity-ridden Sahel nation.

Gazans Despair After Israel Announces More Displacement

Israel’s plan to capture more land in Gaza and relocate thousands of civilians has heightened a sense of hopelessness among Palestinians.

Israel’s latest plan to displace people in northern Gaza has prompted a new wave of despair among Palestinian civilians in the territory, many of whom have already been displaced several times since the war began.

The displacement plan would compound an already dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, where hunger has soared since Israel imposed a blockade on aid supplies in March, prompting the United Nations to warn this week of a “growing humanitarian catastrophe.”

“We don’t want to even hear the word ‘evacuation’ again,” said Anees Jneed, 31, a displaced Palestinian living in a makeshift shelter in northern Gaza. Mr. Jneed said his family had already been displaced at least six times since the war began in October 2023.
