When Anna was planning her first visit to Xinjiang in 2015, her friends were perplexed.
"They couldn't understand why I'd visit a place that back then was considered one of China's most dangerous areas."
One of her friends pulled out of the trip and started "ghosting" her on WeChat, said the 35-year-old Chinese national, who did not want to reveal her real name.

Young men from Ukraine increasingly coming to Germany
Since Ukraine eased travel restrictions to allow men aged 18 to 22 to go abroad, more and more young Ukrainians are applying for temporary protection in Germany. What are their reasons for coming?
Almost 1.3 million Ukrainian refugees have come to Germany since Russia launched its war of aggression in February 2022. At the start of October 2025, the central register of foreign nationals recorded 1,293,672 individuals who had been granted temporary protection since the war began. Until recently, the majority were Ukrainian women with children, or pensioners. Now, though, large numbers of men under the age of 22 have begun to arrive.
This is because Ukraine's government has changed the rules on who is permitted to cross the border. Since August 28, restrictions have been lifted on men aged between 18 and 22 leaving the country. This has led to a huge rise in the number of Ukrainian men in this age group registering in Germany: From around 100 a week to almost 1,000, according to the German Interior Ministry.
On the trail of migrant smugglers 2/3: Shipwreck survivor to stand trial for involuntary homicide
Ibrahim A., a Sudanese migrant fleeing the civil war, boarded a small inflatable boat hoping to cross the English Channel in August 2023. When the boat sank, killing seven people, French authorities arrested the 31-year-old, who they suspected of piloting the deadly voyage. He now faces 10 years in prison, unless his lawyer can prove his innocence.
At the Paris Court of Justice, Ibrahim A. is trying to prove his innocence to the investigating judge questioning him.
“I come from Darfur,” he says. “We don’t even have a sea where you could learn to row a boat.”
Ibrahim A. is originally from Sudan, the land-locked east African country that has been plunged into civil war since 2023. Four months before his appearance at the Paris court in December 2023, the 31-year-old was arrested and charged with involuntary homicide in connection with the sinking of a “small boat” that killed seven people in the English Channel.
Inside the ‘House of Horrors’ mass murder case that rocked India – and may never be solved
Nearly two decades after the chilling discovery of mutilated bodies in drains behind a bungalow in a village near Delhi, India’s top court is now poised to overturn the last remaining conviction in the serial murder case. Speaking to Namita Singh, parents of the victims say they are losing hope of receiving justice
Nestled between two larger and more modern buildings in a village in northern India sits house number D5, an abandoned bungalow whose garden is now overrun with vines. Owned by a local businessman, the deserted house is spoken about in hushed tones for its role in a grisly tale that is yet to be concluded.
Nearly two decades ago, children and young women began disappearing without a trace from this quiet village of Nithari, located some 20km from India’s capital Delhi, in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Desperate families scoured nearby streets and repeatedly approached the police, but to no avail. As the number of disappearances continued to rise, eventually reaching a total of 19, fear gripped local villagers who started to refuse to leave home after midday.
