Israel launches attack on Iran as explosions heard in Tehran

Israel said
it had attacked Iran early on Saturday morning, as explosions were heard across Tehran.

An Israeli military spokesman said the country had “launched a pre-emptive strike against Iran to remove threats to the state of Israel.”

Israel closed its airspace and declared a state of emergency, in anticipation of Iranian drone and missile strikes in response.Analysis

Sirens sounded across Israel at around 08:15 local time (06:15 GMT), alerting people of the threat of a possible missile attack. The Israeli strikes happen amid diplomatic efforts between US and Iranian officials for a deal to curb Iran’s nuclear programme and avert a war, and negotiations were expected to continue next week.

Iran had made concessions in the talks, although US President Donald Trump - who had previously threatened to attack Iran to put pressure on its leaders to accept a deal - said yesterday he was not “thrilled” with the way the discussions were going.

Four shot dead on US-registered speedboat by border guards, Cuba says

Four people who entered Cuban waters on a US-registered speedboat have been shot dead by border guards, Cuba's government said.

In a statement, Cuba's interior ministry said that the speedboat's passengers opened fire on a coast guard vessel that approached them.

Six additional passengers were wounded in the incident, which took place near an island on Cuba's northern coast.

The identities of those on board the vessel or what it was doing in the area are unclear, with the Cuban government saying an investigation has been launched to "clarify" the event.

In statement posted on X, the ministry said the Florida-registered vessel - with the registration number FL7726SH - was detected near Cayo Falcones, in the country's central Villa Clara province on Wednesday morning.

Are Russia and China actually doing anything to support Cuba?

The Pentagon released footage of the ship being boarded in the Indian Ocean. The US Defence Dpartment says the vessel had defied President Trump's so-called 'quarantine of sanctioned ships in the Caribbean'. The tanker was one of several that fled the Venezuelan coast in early January, after the United States abducted the country's leader Nicolas Maduro. Meanwhile, the US is tightening its grip on Cuba's oil supplies, and the country is beginning to feel the adverse effects. Havana has warned that foreign airlines will no longer be able to refuel because of dwindling supplies. Some airlines have already suspended flights to Cuba. Meanwhile, the UN is warning of a humanitarian crisis.

Revealed: Private jet owned by Trump friend used by ICE to deport Palestinians to West Bank

Exclusive: Luxury aircraft owned by property tycoon close to US president’s family has twice flown Palestinian men from Arizona to Tel Aviv

On the morning of 21 January, Israeli authorities left eight Palestinian men at a West Bank checkpoint. Disoriented and cold, they were dressed in prison-issued tracksuits and carried their few belongings in plastic bags.

Hours earlier, they had been sitting with their wrists and ankles shackled on the plush leather seats of a private jet owned by the Florida property tycoon Gil Dezer, a longtime business partner of Donald Trump.

A Guardian investigation has established the flight was part of a secretive and politically sensitive US government operation to deport Palestinians arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

One of those deported on the January flight was Maher Awad, a 24-year-old originally from the West Bank, who had lived in the US for nearly a decade. Speaking to the Guardian in the town of Rammun, Maher shared photos of his girlfriend and newborn son in Michigan.
