Hong Kong leader Lam announces to 'vigorously implement' new security law

Hong Kong's Chief Executive Carrie Lam said that the government will "vigorously implement" a controversial new national security law imposed on the semi-autonomous Chinese territory by Beijing last week. The new legislation targets what authorities in mainland China define as secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces. Those violating the law could face up to life in prison. Hong Kong police fire teargas to disperse Christmas Eve protests

Hundreds of officers guard main roads as thousands of shoppers and tourists look on

Hong Kong riot police fired rounds of teargas at thousands of anti-government protesters, many wearing masks and reindeer horns, after scuffles in shopping centres and a tourist district on Christmas Eve.
Demonstrators inside the malls threw umbrellas and other objects at police who responded by beating some with batons; one pointed his gun at the crowd, but did not fire.
Police used teargas to disperse protesters who had occupied the main roads and blocked traffic outside the malls and nearby luxury hotels, including the Peninsula, in the Tsim Sha Tsui tourist district of Kowloon.

Hong Kong protests: Why we stormed the parliament - BBC Stories

On 1 July 2019, hundreds of protesters stormed Hong Kong's Legislative Council, (Legco), spraying graffiti and defacing symbols of the Hong Kong law-making body. The ransacking of the government building marked a turning point in a protest movement against a now suspended extradition law.
Thousands of young people have demonstrated for eight straight weeks on the streets of Hong Kong. Weekly protests frequently escalate into heated street battles between demonstrators and the police. Protesters are demanding the complete withdrawal of the extradition bill, the implementation of full democracy in Hong Kong and amnesty for all protesters arrested. The BBC has spoken to three protesters who took part in the storming of the law-making body. They spoke to us under the condition of anonymity.
