At least 20 people were killed and 55 wounded by an Israeli airstrike in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip on Thursday, according to the Hamas-run health ministry of Gaza. As Israel continues its assault on Gaza, there is growing concern over humanitarian conditions in the besieged enclave.

Israel, Qatar say deal with Hamas to release hostages is close

Last night, Israeli soldiers stormed Gaza's biggest hospital, in search for Hamas militants. Under the cover of darkness, Israeli forces entered the Al-Shifa hospital — a medical center overcrowded with people, many of them made homeless by the war. The Israeli Defense Forces claim that they have found proof of Hamas' terror infrastructure underneath the hospital.

UN official: Winter will make situation in Gaza much worse

 “We are witnessing a humanitarian tragedy in Gaza,” Juliette Touma of the UN agency, UNRWA told DW. More than 800,000 people have fled to United Nations emergency shelters in central and southern Gaza fleeing the fighting between Israeli defense forces and Hamas and other Islamist militants in ther north of the Gaza Strip, Touma said

Situation around Gaza City hospitals remains tense

Reporting from Khan Younis, Gaza

It is now evening here in Gaza and tension remains at the four main hospitals in Gaza City, with Israeli troops drawing close.

The unease is especially felt in the territory's largest hospital – Al-Shifa.

People inside say they can hear explosions and firing around the hospital and that Israeli tanks are about 100m (328ft) away.

I spoke to the director of the hospital, who says around 15,000 people remain there, including those who have fled from a nearby refugee camp that has been surrounded by Israeli tanks.

Those who remain at Al-Shifa are largely the elderly and sick, who cannot make the journey further south to where Israel has promised greater safety.

The hospital’s director says they are overwhelmed by the number of injured people and are having to treat people in corridors and on the floor.

Meanwhile, the fighting around Al-Quds hospital has also intensified tonight. We understand an Israeli navy ship was involved as well as tanks, which have surrounded the hospital.

Some leaders are more concerned about Gaza’s future than ending war now

 

Palestinians live moment to moment as Israel’s bombardment continues.

Life in Gaza is dominated by fears of Israeli attacks, finding somewhere safe, worrying about food, water, medicine and whether loved ones are still alive.

In the middle of this brutal present, some world leaders have already begun discussing the future, once the war is over.

The United States Secretary of State Anthony Blinken says neither will there be a place for the Palestinian group Hamas, nor can Israel reoccupy the Gaza Strip.

That is contrary to what Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is saying.
