Medicare for All: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
- Nobody knows what it will actually cost. Anyone saying otherwise is full of shit.
- Most cost estimates come in at or below our nations current public and private sector combined health care spending, and even if it doesn’t end up that way, it’s worth it.
- The idea of “choice” is an illusion. Most people have one choice: Whatever their employer offers them.
- People often have no choice at all in emergencies but to go out-of-network — often even when they’ve gone out of their way to try to stay in network.
- Under M4A, every provider is in network.
- The “wait time” argument about other nations with nationalized healthcare that is currently a favorite of those opposed to M4A is basically bogus and based on non-emergency or elective procedures.
- People wait ridiculous amounts of time *now* because they simply cannot afford the co-pays and deductibles needed to be met to get said procedures.
- A system where people have to choose between one life saving medication or another due to cost is inherently unjust.
- Yes, people in the health care bureaucracy will need new jobs, but that can be handled and is part of the plans offered by both Sanders and Warren.
- The current system, as Oliver put it, is a “shit sandwich”, while “Medicare for all who want it” is “still a shit sandwich, only with avocado on it because the same shit still remains.”
If you’re arguing against M4A, you’re arguing for all of the flaws and unfairness inherent in our current system and you need to own that.

The Moment We've Been Waiting For: John Oliver On The Mueller Report
It's like Barr summarized the 'Twilight' novels as 'a girl in Florida goes to third base with a wookie,' he said.
On Last Week Tonight, John Oliver said Trump's saving grace may have been that his staff was too inept to work with the Russians. Via CNN:
"The news that the President ordered subordinates to do things that might constitute obstruction and then they just ignored him is both reassuring and also terrifying," Oliver said.Oliver also slammed Attorney General William Barr's press conference and pre-release summary about the report.
"It's like Barr summarized the 'Twilight' novels as 'a girl in Florida goes to third base with a wookie.' No! No! That's not what happens," Oliver joked. "I'm not even sure we're reading the same underlying material."The host concluded that the report's findings are "very depressing" and there's a lot the public still doesn't know due to redactions and other investigations. However, he did say that the report shedding light on Russia's interference was ultimately a good thing."The point is, having the knowledge that the Mueller report provides is infinitely better than the alternative," Oliver said. "'Cause that knowledge can inform Congress going forward and — crucially — voters a year and a half from now."

Trump vs. The World: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)
John Oliver returned to HBO last night, and his main segment was on Trump, of course.
Donald Trump has failed so miserably to encourage American leadership abroad that international rivals like China and Germany (yes, THAT Germany) are filling the gap.
The Trump administration has not filled large numbers of ambassadorships, as well, including in critical countries like Turkey and Saudi Arabia.
And Trump has made himself a laughingstock of impersonating comedians around the world. Oliver gives us some noteworthy examples worth the click.
Then John Oliver changes his tune and defends the country he has chosen for his own:
JOHN OLIVER: As an immigrant who has fallen in love with this country, for what it's worth, please allow me to speak to the rest of the world in America's defense. Donald Trump does not represent America — well, to be completely honest, he does reflect it a bit. But the point is America is not one thing; it's a beautiful mess of contradictions where good and bad are mixed together. For instance, it makes Mountain Dew, which tastes like a honeydew melon was fu*ked by a radioactive cloud. On the other hand, it makes awesome beds shaped like the Batmobile.America is the country that gave you Star Wars — you're welcome — and Scientology — we're sorry about that. And sometimes, what's great and terrible about us is just impossible to separate.
