Why are some Indigenous peoples trying to stop a Trump administration plan to allow oil drilling in northern Alaska?


The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, a protected region in Alaska's far north, is one of the world's last few unspoiled environments - a remarkable wilderness that is home to endangered polar bears, grey wolves and wild caribou.
But now the Trump administration, brushing aside objections from Democrats in Congress, is pressing ahead with plans to let oil and gas companies drill in the refuge.

An insight into the battle for Native American land rights as protests continue against the Dakota Access oil pipeline.


For months, Native Americans have been protesting against the Dakota Access oil pipeline, a multibillion-dollar construction project that tribal leaders say is threatening sacred sites, as well as the tribe's source of drinking water.
The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe says the federal government failed to properly consult with them before issuing permits for the pipeline.

Dakota Access Pipeline: Protests, politics and the press

After more than six months of protests, the Native American Standing Rock tribe and their supporters have wrested a victory in the case of the Dakota Access Pipeline. The scant coverage of these protests highlight at least two areas where the American mainstream media consistently underperforms – indigenous and environmental issues.
