Frontline Nicaragua
We investigate the reasons behind the recent insurrection against Nicaragua's Sandinista government.
In April 2018, protests against pension reform plans in Nicaragua quickly mushroomed into a widespread anti-government movement.
The country's Sandinista regime under President Daniel Ortega cracked down hard. Over the following year, hundreds were killed, thousands more were exiled or detained and independent media voices were suppressed.
As negotiations to resolve the crisis finally got underway earlier this year, we sent filmmaker Rodrigo Vazquez to investigate.

What's triggering protests in Nicaragua?
President Daniel Ortega is under pressure to step down, but the leader blames others for the months of turmoil.

Thirty-nine years ago, Daniel Ortega and Sandinista rebels were victorious in deposing President Anastasio Somoza.
The left-wing rebel fighters called him a dictator - which is exactly what many are calling Ortega now.
The three-time president has defied almost four months of protests against his rule.
