Hundreds of firefighters worked to put out a wildfire in southern Portugal on Tuesday, with 1,400 people evacuated since the start of the blaze. The fire has destroyed around 6,700 hectares of land.

July 2023 was the hottest month on record - and likely Earth's hottest in 120,000 years, according to the European Union and the World Meteorological Organization. Unrelenting storms and heatwaves, combined with off-the-charts ocean temperatures engulfed the United States.

How is extreme weather changing Pakistan?
Unprecedented flooding in Pakistan has left millions of people in ruin, with the country’s central government and provincial authorities scrambling to provide urgent help to those who need it.
An estimated 33 million people have been affected by weeks of flash flooding throughout the monsoon season. The southern provinces of Sindh, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been particularly badly hit, leaving a third of Pakistan underwater. More than 1,300 people have been killed.

How a warmer Arctic could intensify extreme weather

That’s because warming temperatures in the Arctic are altering the behavior of the polar jet stream, a high-altitude river of air that drives weather patterns across the globe. As the winds that propel the jet stream weaken, storms, droughts, and extreme heat and cold move over continents at slower rates, meaning bad weather can stick around for longer.
