The European Union’s migration policy has been failing for decades. The question of how to deal with the arrival of migrants and refugees has divided the continent like no other. Far-right politicians have seized upon that as a part of successful campaigns. Today it’s heading in a different direction: border fences and agreements with autocratic leaders.

How big a 'crisis' is the flow of migrants to Europe really?

In the north African country Tunisia, where authorities have intensified an operation to intercept migrants who are planning to reach Europe by crossing the Mediterranean sea. The Tunisian National Guard says it has arrested smugglers and stopped more than two-thousand people in its coastal cities, most people have been held back in the city of Sfax.

 

Germany sees rising migration at Polish border

Regional lawmakers in Germany are calling on the government to get a grip on what they call uncontrolled irregular migration. So far this year more than 14-thousand people entered Germany illegally via the border with Poland. Local authorities say reception centers cannot cope with the pressure.

We join a Ukrainian mother and her son as they prepare to leave Lisbon, where they went to flee the war two and a half months ago. Despite ongoing conflict with Russian forces in the south and east of the country, the UN Refugee Agency has reported more than 4.4m* border crossings back into Ukraine since 28 February. Many of those crossing are thought to be Ukrainians heading back to parts of the country now considered relatively safe, hoping to reunite with family, rebuild their country and restart their lives. Katya and Nazar set off for Kyiv hoping to make it in time to celebrate Nazar's ninth birthday. We join husband and father Sergii at Kyiv bus station as he waits for them to arrive.

Five years ago, in the summer of 2015, Europe faced its biggest migration crisis since the Second World War. Hundreds of thousands of desperate people fleeing war and economic hardship tried to reach the continent. The largest group of migrants making the perilous journey came from Syria, where four years of civil war had forced them to flee.
