Two Russian missiles have hit the centre of Kramatorsk in eastern Ukraine, killing at least 3 people and injuring 22, Ukrainian officials have said. A restaurant and shopping area were hit in Tuesday's strike on the city, which is under Ukrainian control but close to Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine. People may be trapped under the rubble and a rescue operation is under way. Local authorities say the area had a high concentration of civilians when the missiles hit and a child is said to be among those injured as a result of the attack.

North Korea missile launch sparks 'evacuation' sirens in Japan

A missile launch by North Korea sparked confusion in northern Japan, where an evacuation order was issued and then retracted within 30 minutes. Sirens blared across Hokkaido and residents were told to "evacuate immediately" on Thursday morning. Authorities said the missile did not land near the island and withdrew the alert.

NATO investigates reported Russian missiles in Poland

 

Russian missile strikes have crossed into Poland, killing two people, the Associated Press (AP) news agency reported on Tuesday. Polish media reported that two people died Tuesday afternoon after a projectile struck Przewodow, a Polish village near the border with Ukraine. A NATO official told DW's Teri Schultz in Brussels that officials were looking into the reports and consulting closely with Poland.

City of Yokohama tweets about North Korean missile launch: Big Mistake

That's right the city of Yokohama sent out a tweet which announced the launch of North Korean missiles.   Slight problem those supposed missiles had never been launched.  

  Officials in Yokohama were left red-faced on Wednesday after mistakenly announcing the launch of a North Korean missile to 40,000 followers on Twitter.The city, south of Tokyo, prematurely fired its Tweet just before noon, announcing “North Korea has launched a missile” with blank spaces to indicate the exact time.
“We received a call from one of our followers who had noticed the mistake. We had the Tweet ready and waiting, but for an unknown reason it was dispatched erroneously,” said a city official.
The city retracted the Tweet about 20 minutes later and apologised to followers of @yokohama_saigai, the official said.

Perhaps next time they'll take a look out the window to see if the missiles had been launched or maybe they could have just verified it with the Japanese Ministry of Defense.  How about  laying off the Red Bull's and calm down a little.

North Korea rocket 'has 10,000km range'

This headline from BBC doesn't really explain what the technological know how and achievement needed to construct an intercontinental missiles even at its most basic level.  So, why the need for a scaremongering headline?

Yes, North Korea believes that in becoming a  credible it will achieve equal status among nations but wishing to become such a power and accomplishing that goal are two very different things. A great deal of scientific and technological knowledge is required before a nation state can begin the process of placing a nuclear warhead on a missile.  Neither of which the North Koreans seem to have.  

North Korea may or may not have rocket that can reach America's west coast but what else does it have?  Not much other than bluster.

North Korea's recent rocket launch shows it has the ability to fire a rocket more than 10,000km (6,200 miles), South Korean officials say.

The estimate, which would potentially put the Western US in range, was based on an analysis of rocket debris.

However, there was no confirmation that the North had the re-entry technology needed to deliver a missile.

Experts believe North Korea is also years away from gaining the ability to mount a nuclear bomb on a missile.

North Korea launched the Unha-3 rocket on 12 December, in defiance of sanctions and international warnings.

'Crude'

The official said the type of oxidiser container that was found from the first stage of the rocket launch would rarely be used by countries with advanced space technology.

"Welding was crude, done manually," the official said.

South Korea would not be able to tell whether the North had the technology to achieve re-entry until debris from the second and third stages of the rocket launch was analysed, the defence ministry said.

North Korea threatens America with missiles

North Korea says it has missiles that can hit the US mainland, in a statement two days after South Korea unveiled a missile deal with the US.

The statement said US bases in "Japan, Guam and the US mainland" were within its "scope of strike".

It follows Seoul's announcement on Sunday that it would almost triple the range of its own missile system.

Pyongyang is thought to be working on a long-range missile, but two recent rocket tests ended in failure.

North Korea's neighbours said the failed rocket launches - in April 2009 and April 2012 - were tests related to the development of the long-range Taepodong-2 missile system.

Yes, more threats from the country that can't shoot straight, lie very well and whose satellite launch  vehicles "missile test" seem to blow-up or denigrate  before reaching orbit. 

But hey, they are masters of the universe a very small universe seen and known only to them.
