The real winners (and losers) of the US-China trade dispute | DW explainer

With the US presidential election right around the corner, we wanted to check-in on the status of Donald Trump’s infamous trade dispute (ahem, not a war) with China. Who are the real winners and losers?
 

Who stands to gain or lose from US-China trade deal?

After more than two years of escalating tarrifs and a seemingly never-ending trade war, the US and China have agreed on a first step towards a truce. If it holds, it could be a boost for U.S. President Donald Trump in an election year. But who will benefit the most from this initial phase of a broader trade agreement? China has promised to open up its markets and buy more US goods. In exchange, the US will lift some tarrifs. Yet most will stay in place - and that's where the problems start.

Donald Trump Gave A Speech

Donald Trump gave a speech congratulating himself for making himself great again.  The mango menace fancies himself   the great negotiator no matter the situation.  Just look at all of his great "negotiations' and there outcome.  In starting a trade war with China for the supposed goal of ending tariffs on various agricultural and manufactured goods has been a complete failure. Because the American agriculture sector was greatly the government was forced to provide bailout funds greater than what was used to save the American automobile industry.   Of course his love affair with Kim-Jong un as led to; well a lot of photo-op's with no further advancements in ending North Korea's nuclear weapons programs.  One can assume that people the world over were mighty impressed with pictures of two guys who need to go on strict diets.   Donald Trump has also pulled the U.S. out the Paris Climate Agreement saying he could achieve a better deal of course he hasn't.

His biggest failure of course was America's unilateral withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action which placed constraints on Iran's nuclear development programs.   Donald Trump like every previous deal and treaty he's withdrawn the U.S. from hasn't led to a  better agreement and when asked just what that new agreement might look like and how it might be better there's nothing but silence.    

Trade wars, explained

Tariffs can be used as a useful tool to protect domestic industry or to serve as a punitive measure against another country. But President Trump’s bluster and threats of imposing tariffs on foreign imports to the US have raised the specter of a trade war with China, and more recently, Mexico. The “weapons” used in a trade war are the stuff we use everyday — the food we eat, the cars we drive to work and the computers we use. If a trade war can have such a pervasive impact on our daily lives, why would a country choose to engage in one? And what even is a trade war anyway
