The wife of Mr Lopez and the daughter of Mr Ledezma said they were holding President Nicolas Maduro responsible for the fate of the two men.
Both leaders in recent days have called on Venezuelans to join protests against Mr Maduro over the creation of an all-powerful legislative body called the constitutional assembly, which was elected on Sunday

Xi shores up power with demand for army obedience and foreign respect

President warns that China will not ‘swallow bitter fruit’ of threats to sovereignty, while telling military: ‘The Communist party commands the gun’

President Xi Jinping has vowed China will never “swallow the bitter fruit” of foreign meddling or invasion, in his latest move to assert his authority ahead of a key political summit marking the end of his first five-year term.
In a 50-minute speech at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, the Mao era arena of Communist party rule, Xi told members of the military their calling was not as an aggressive or expansionist force.
“The Chinese people love peace … but we have the confidence to defeat all invasions. We will never allow any people, organisation or political party to split any part of Chinese territory out of the country at any time, in any form,” Xi said to loud applause.

Paris poised to welcome 2024 Olympics after LA agrees to host 2028 Games

Paris moved within a hair’s breadth on Monday of formally being chosen to host the 2024 Summer Olympics after rival candidate city Los Angeles agreed to accept the consolation prize of the 2028 Games in a rare two-way contest between the cities.

Both cities were competing for the 2024 Summer Games after several other contenders withdrew, and the stage was set for Paris to win its bid when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed that Los Angeles had officially embraced the later date of 2028.
“The IOC welcomes this decision of the Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Candidature Committee,” IOC President Thomas Bach said in a statement.

US detects 'highly unusual' North Korean submarine activity

Updated 0223 GMT (1023 HKT) August 1, 2017

The US military has detected "highly unusual and unprecedented levels" of North Korean submarine activity and evidence of an "ejection test" in the days following Pyongyang's second intercontinental ballistic missile launch this month, a defense official told CNN on Monday.
An ejection test examines a missile's "cold-launch system," which uses high pressure steam to propel a missile out of the launch canister into the air before its engines ignite. That helps prevent flames and heat from the engine from damaging either the submarine, submersible barge or any nearby equipment used to launch the missile.

The suspects, who are to stand trial on Tuesday, are accused of conspiring to overthrow the government from an airbase seen as the plotters' hub.

Tokyo 2020 Olympic organizers begin accepting ideas for mascots

The Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Tokyo 2020) on Tuesday launched a competition inviting members of the public in Japan to submit design proposals for the Olympic and Paralympic mascots. Residents of Japan, including non-Japanese, can design their own set of mascots and submit these through the Tokyo 2020 website until noon on Monday Aug 14.
To mark the inauguration of the competition, Tokyo 2020 held a ceremony at Kuramae Elementary School in Asakusabashi in Tokyo, attended by over 200 schoolchildren. At the event, four-time Olympian Ai Sugiyama and three-time Paralympian Aki Taguchi mingled with the children and shared their stories and experiences of being athletes and competing at the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
In May this year, Tokyo 2020 announced an innovative method of selecting the winner of the design competition that aims to engage younger generations and give them an important role to play in the preparations for the Games.
