Jair Bolsonaro: Brazil presidential frontrunner stabbed at campaign rally
Controversial far-right candidate injured in abdomen after stabbing on campaign trail in town of Juiz de Fora

Jair Bolsonaro, the far-right frontrunner in next month’s Brazilian presidential election, is in a serious condition in hospital after being stabbed while campaigning.
Bolsonaro was taken to hospital in the town of Juiz de Fora, about 125 miles (200km) north of Rio de Janeiro, after he was stabbed by a man who rushed up to him while he was being carried through a crowd on the shoulders of a supporter.
He was in a serious but stable condition after injuries to his abdomen, surgeons at the Santa Casa de Misericórdia hospital said.

Mexican police discover mass grave containing 166 human skulls thought to be linked to cartel wars

Dozens of victims discovered in pits amid widespread cartel violence in Veracruz state
Mass graves containing the remains of at least 166 people have been uncovered in a region of Mexico plagued by cartel violence.
State prosecutors in Veracruz said on Thursday dozens of skulls had been found in a cluster of 32 smaller pits following an anonymous tip last month.
Situated on Mexico’s eastern coast, the region has seen widespread violent crime in recent years due to its use as a pathway for drugs gangs transporting narcotics northwards to the US border.

Iran hosts Russia, Turkey for ‘crunch’ Syria summit

The presidents of Iran, Russia and Turkey meet Friday in Tehran for a summit set to decide the future of Idlib province amid fears of a humanitarian disaster in Syria's last major rebel bastion.

Hundreds of civilians fled the northwestern province Thursday as government forces and their allies readied for what could be the last -- and bloodiest -- major battle of Syria's devastating seven-year civil war.
Seized from government forces in 2015, Idlib and adjacent areas form the final major chunk of Syrian territory still under opposition control, which is home to some three million people -- around half of them displaced from other parts of the country, according to the UN.

Seoul to inspect thousands of toilets for spy cams, but women say not enough being done

It was late at night when the police knocked on Choi's door and showed her a video which turned her life upside down.
The blurry footage was of a naked woman she recognized as herself, walking casually through her apartment on the 22nd floor of a building in downtown Seoul.
It had been taken through a window with a telephoto lens from the roof of a neighboring building. Choi -- who requested she only be identified by her last name -- was left speechless. No apartments looked into hers and she had been completely unaware of being watched, or even that she could possibly be watched.

Death toll from Hokkaido quake rises to 16 as hopes fade for survivors

By Kyoko Hasegawa and Richard Carter
Rescue workers with bulldozers and sniffer dogs scrabbled through the mud Friday to find survivors from a landslide that buried houses after a powerful quake in Hokkaido, as the death toll rose to 16.
Around 26 people are still unaccounted for in the small town of Atsuma, where a cluster of dwellings were wrecked when a hillside collapsed with the force of the 6.6-magnitude quake, causing deep brown scars in the landscape.
"We've heard there are people still stuck under the mud, so we've been working around the clock but it's been difficult to rescue them," a Self-Defense Force serviceman in Atsuma told public broadcaster NHK. "We will take measures to find them quickly."

Dear Anonymous Trump Official, There Is No Redemption in Your Cowardly Op-Ed

DEAR ANONYMOUS TRUMP OFFICIAL,
You claim, on the opinion pages of the “failing” New York Times no less, that senior officials working for the president of the United States “are working diligently from within to frustrate parts of his agenda and his worst inclinations.”
“I would know,” you add dramatically. “I am one of them.”
Sorry, what was the point of this particular piece? And what is it that you want from the rest of us? A thank-you card? A round of applause? The nation’s undying gratitude?
Screw. You.
