US government shutdown looms over border wall row

A partial US government shutdown is now just hours away after US lawmakers failed to break a budget impasse.
Mr Trump, who has to sign off any deal, is insisting at least $5bn (£4bn) in government funding be included to help build his long-promised US border wall.
Lawmakers adjourned from last-minute talk efforts on Friday evening.
Without a new agreement in place, funding for about a quarter of all US federal agencies will lapse at 00:00 local time (05:00 GMT Saturday).
It means the departments of Homeland Security, Transportation, Agriculture, State, and Justice will begin to shutdown and federal national parks and forests will also close.

Thousands of Hungarians join latest rally against Orban’s 'slave law'

One of labour reforms allows employers to ask staff to work up to 400 hours per year of overtime

Thousands of Hungarians marched to the presidential palace late on Friday to protest against labour reforms as a rally led by spoof political party MKKP merged with a subsequent demonstration staged by opposition groups.
Passage of two laws last week backed by prime minister Viktor Orban’s Fidesz party angered a variety of groups.
One, dubbed by critics the “slave law”, allows employers to ask staff to work up to 400 hours per year of overtime. Another would set up new courts which critics say could be politically manipulated.

Google fails to thread the China needle, again

Updated 0015 GMT (0815 HKT) December 22, 2018

Google's secret project to build a censored search engine to get back into the Chinese market is on its last legs -- if not already doomed -- according to the latest report from The Intercept's Ryan Gallagher, who broke the original story.
This month, Google CEO Sundar Pichai told US lawmakers there were no plans to launch in China, after weeks of criticism both within Google and by human rights groups, internet freedom advocates and US lawmakers.

Erdogan delays Syria operation, welcomes US troop withdrawal

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also vows to clear Kurdish and ISIL armed groups from northern Syria.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday that his country would postpone a military operation against Syrian Kurdish fighters in northeast Syria as he "cautiously" welcomed Washington's decision to withdraw its troops in the area.
Speaking during a speech in Istanbul, Erdogan said the US decision meant Turkey would "wait a little longer" before launching the operation.

REP. RO KHANNA ON AFGHANISTAN: “TRUMP’S INSTINCTS TO WITHDRAW ARE CORRECT, BUT THE TACTICAL IMPLEMENTATION MATTERS”

December 22 2018

THE HOUSE OF Representatives plans to vote in January on a new War Powers Resolution introduced by California Rep. Ro Khanna that would effectively end U.S. military intervention on behalf of Saudi Arabia in the Yemeni civil war.
But the president’s back-to-back announcements Wednesday and Thursday that American troops would be leaving Syria and Afghanistan has broadened the focus of de-escalation efforts — motivating progressive Democrats in the House to work on legislation that would ensure that withdrawal doesn’t worsen conditions in the region.
