How six months of protests changed Hong Kong
for ever

By James Giffiths and Jessie Yeung CNN

Ivan had screwed up, and now he was trapped.
A member of a small cell of frontline protesters -- one of the many who have fought riot police across Hong Kong during the past six months of anti-government unrest -- his job was handling logistics and keeping an eye on police movements.
Often, he says he would hang back to help make sure equipment was getting to those at the front, helmets and masks passed from person to person in a massive human chain through the protest lines, or to ensure that there was a clear path of retreat for when the police inevitably charged.

Patient advocacy groups are concerned choosing 'lucky' kids isn't the right approach

The pharmaceutical company Novartis is planning on setting up a lottery system to give away the world’s most expensive drug for free, but patient advocates are concerned that picking “lucky” people isn’t the best way to do things.
The drug, Zolgensma, is a $2.1m treatment for spinal muscular atrophy, a rare genetic disorder that leads to children losing control of their muscles.
The lottery system — which has been called a managed access program — would establish a bi-weekly draw for babies under the age of two who live in countries where Zolgensma is not approved.

World's population to hit 7.75 billion in 2019

The alarming increase is the estimate from a German foundation that monitors populations. It also suggests the 8 billion mark will be reached in the year 2023.
By the end of this year there will be some 7.75 billion people living on planet earth, according to Germany's Foundation for World Population (DSW).
The estimate gauges that the world's population will have increased by 83 million since January 1 2019, which equates to roughly the number of inhabitants in Germany.

Tens of thousands flee Syria's Idlib as deadly bombings intensify

UN observers say at least 18,000 refugees have fled Idlib in just 24 hours as bombings kill more people.

Tens of thousands of civilians have fled Syria's Idlib province to the Turkish border, after an increase in bombings by Russia-backed government forces, creating a new humanitarian challenge as the winter season arrives.
United Nations observers said on Friday that at least 18,000 people have been displaced in Idlib in just 24 hours, as the deadly bombardments continue.

The abandoned asylum seekers on the US-Mexico border

Thousands of asylum seekers remain at risk in Mexican border towns, waiting for humanitarian aid.
Mere feet from the US-Mexico border, thousands of asylum seekers have been forced to live in squalid conditions in some of the most dangerous parts of Mexico. They are under threat from drug cartels and dependent on American volunteers for even the most basic necessities.
The humanitarian crisis is happening in plain sight, but they’re still waiting for desperately needed aid. Some migrants are lucky to find housing in shelters, hotels, or rooms for rent, but for more than 5,000 others, only colorful tents and tarps, some held up by only sticks and stones, stand between them and the elements, even as temperatures drop below freezing. The encampments are clustered around bridges linked to US ports of entry along the Rio Grande, where families and children have been waiting for a chance to apply for asylum for months.
