Seattle protest: Police and anti-racism demonstrators clash at march

Police in the US city of Seattle clashed with crowds marching in support of anti-racism protests, in one of the most tense of several rallies held across the country on Saturday.
Officers used stun grenades and pepper spray, as protesters set a fire and broke windows. The march was in support of ongoing protests in Portland.
Forty-five people were arrested while 21 officers were injured.
In Austin, Texas one man was killed during a Black Lives Matter march.

'White as hell': Portland protesters face off with Trump but are they eclipsing Black Lives Matter?

On another night of confrontation with federal agents, activists said their message was in danger of being forgotten

Teal Lindseth surveyed the sea of mothers she was about to lead into the firing line.
“I look at this crowd and I don’t see many black people,” lamented the 21-year-old African American activist. “Oregon is white as hell. Whitewashed.”
Lindseth has been a stalwart of the Black Lives Matter protests that have continued for nearly 60 days without interruption in a city that was derided as “Little Beirut” over the intensity of its demonstrations against a visit by George HW Bush four decades ago.

Five white men could be seen clutching placards and a banner that read “Help the French, not the Africans” in a photo of the protest shared by Ms Sylla.

Cheap, Expendable and ImperiledThe Systematic Exploitation of Harvest Workers in Europe

Millions of seasonal workers across the Continent are responsible for picking much of the low-cost produce available in European supermarkets. But an international research project reveals that many of these workers face abysmal conditions – and the COVID-19 crisis has made things even worse.

When George Mitache heard of a job in Germany in early April, he could hardly believe his luck. An acquaintance from a neighboring village was looking for people who could work the strawberry harvest in the country. The intermediary claimed Mitache would receive 5,000 to 6,000 euros ($5,700 to $6,900) for three months of work on a farm near the western German city of Bonn, and said that the flight and room and board would be included.

Growing Israel protest movement calls for Netanyahu to go

"We won't leave until Bibi leaves." Israel's struggle to contain the coronavirus has stirred deep-seated resentment towards Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and protests demanding his resignation are growing by the week.
As the Shabbat rest-day was ending on Saturday evening, thousands of demonstrators headed towards Netanyahu's Jerusalem residence, a main site for protests that have taken place in multiple cities.
Some demonstrators branded Netanyahu -- who has been indicted with bribery, fraud and breach of trust -- as corrupt, while others condemned a lack of coherence in the government's response to the pandemic.

A young man left London to join Israel's army because he wanted to defend the Jewish people but now believes the treatment of Palestinians is morally wrong

  • Joel Carmel was raised in London's Jewish community. He was passionately committed to defending Israel from its many critics, whom he believed were biased and did not grasp the constant threats to its security from the Arabian world.
  • He went to Israel as soon as he could, joined the army, and rose to the rank of second lieutenant. He served in the  West Bank territories, which Israel occupied after the Six-Day War in 1967.
