Fourteen-year-old Indiana Evans is a promising dancer from Hertfordshire, southern England, who was doing 16 hours of practice a week on top of school before the coronavirus pandemic hit.
Indiana fell ill with a cough in early March, said her mother, Jane Evans. Although she didn't have any other coronavirus symptoms, her parents kept her home for two weeks in line with government guidance.
She was never ill enough to be hospitalized, her mother told CNN. Nonetheless, the teenager -- who planned to audition for prestigious dance schools -- can now barely manage a trip to the supermarket.

Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai arrested under new security law

Leading pro-democracy figure detained over alleged foreign collusion as police search Apple Daily offices

One of Hong Kong’s most strident pro-democracy figures has been arrested and the offices of the newspaper he owns searched by police in a stark escalation by authorities enforcing new national security laws brought in by Beijing.
The raid on Apple Daily, Hong Kong’s largest pro-democracy daily paper, and arrest of Jimmy Lai and other senior executives were condemned by activists and journalists, who said they marked “the day press freedom officially died”.
Apple Daily’s publisher, Next Digital Media, said it was “furious” about the raid and arrests. It warned that press freedom was “hanging by a thread” but said its staff remained committed to defending it.

Rise in endangered dolphins, turtles, sharks and rays drowning in Australia’s killer shark nets

‘The death of just one grey nurse shark on the east coast is significant because the species is so endangered,’ says conservationist

Jane Dalton @JournoJan

The number of endangered dolphinsturtlessharks and rays drowning in shark nets off the Australian coast has risen to what conservationists say are “shocking” levels.
In all, 284 dolphins, turtles, sharks and rays were killed in the nets in the latest annual season, according to official data.
Nets are designed to kill sharks to allow swimmers to go into the sea without fear of being bitten, but they are also fatal to many other species, including certain sharks that are harmless to humans.

Belarus: Lukashenko wins election with 80% of vote, election commission says

However, the main challenger has rejected the results and demanded Lukashenko "hand over power." Exit polls on Sunday sparked protests throughout the country, with opponents saying the vote was rigged.

Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko has won a sixth term as president with 80% of the vote, according to preliminary results cited by the Central Election Commission Monday.
Svetlana Tikhanouskaya, a 37-year-old former English teacher who emerged as Lukashenko's chief opponent, won 9.9% of the vote, the election commission said. The other three candidates received less than 2% of the vote. Turnout for the election was put at 84%.

Algerian journalist Khaled Drareni handed three-year jail term

Algerian journalist Khaled Drareni received a three-year prison term Monday, a lawyer said, in a trial rights groups have called a test of press freedom in a country recently rocked by anti-government protests.
It’s a very heavy verdict for Khaled Drareni. We are surprised,” lawyer and president of the Algerian League for Human Rights Nouredine Benissad told AFP.
Drareni, 40, editor of the Casbah Tribune news site and correspondent for French-language channel TV5 Monde, was arrested on March 29 on charges of “inciting an unarmed gathering” and “endangering national unity” after covering demonstrations by the “Hirak” protest movement.

China imposes sanctions on US senators over Hong Kong

China has said it will impose sanctions on 11 US citizens including senators and other high profile officials.
The sanctions come in response to a decision by the US to sanction 11 Chinese officials and allies in Hong Kong for curtailing political freedoms.
Among those targeted by China were Republican Senators Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, and Kenneth Roth, the executive director of charity Human Rights Watch.
China did not target any officials from the Trump administration.
