Dr. Joseph Varon hasn’t had a day off in months.
Friday was his 134th consecutive day leading the coronavirus unit at Houston’s United Memorial Medical Center.
“If you ask me how the hell have I been able to survive for 134 days nonstop, I guess it’s adrenaline,” he said. “But I'm running on fumes. It’s tough.”

China uses Hong Kong security law against US and UK-based activists

  • Arrest warrant issued for campaigner and US citizen Samuel Chu
  • Britons also among those wanted for ‘incitement to secession’

Hong Kong police have issued arrest warrants for six pro-democracy activists living in exile, the first time the city’s authorities have used a sweeping new law to target campaigners living outside Hong Kong.
They include Samuel Chu, an American citizen who lives in the US, Nathan Law, a prominent campaigner who recently relocated to the UK after fleeing Hong Kong, and Simon Cheng, a former British consular staffer who was granted asylum in the UK after alleging he was tortured in China.
Chinese state media reported that the six men were wanted for “incitement to secession and collusion with foreign forces”

Disadvantaged single mothers trained to be a wildlife-saving squad in Zimbabwe

We are protecting wildlife at risk from poachers due to the conservation funding crisis caused by COVID-19. Help is desperately needed to support wildlife rangers, local communities and law enforcement personnel to prevent wildlife crime. Donate to help Stop the Illegal Wildlife Trade HERE
For a single mother living in Zimbabwe, the job prospects are few and limited; growing food to sell, sewing or cooking.
But a new community development initiative is training them to be a crucial part of the anti-poaching frontline, with a focus on female empowerment.

Cease-fire in Ukraine is just a political ploy

For the third time in a year President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has promised Ukrainians a "comprehensive" cease-fire in Donbass. Looming elections rather than progress on the ground are behind that, says DW's Nick Connolly.
Heavily wounded and wearing a white helmet, Ukrainian marine Yaroslav Zhuravel crawls through no man's land back toward the Ukrainian positions. Only a few hundred meters separate him from his own regiment and from the Russian-backed separatists on the other side.
At least that's the story told by drone footage released by the Ukrainian army. Zhuravel was shot while on a mission to recover the body of one of his comrades, a mission the Ukrainian army claims was agreed with the pro-Russian separatist side.

The heat is on as Australia prepares for looming fire season

As inquiry into last year's bushfires prepares to report, those who lost everything hope others do not suffer same fate.

On New Year's Eve 2019, Mark Tregellas made his way to the local beach with much of the rest of the town of Mallacoota, an area of outstanding natural beauty isolated by thick bushland in southeastern Australia.
By 7am the next day, the sky had turned black.
Then a blood-red glow swelled from the horizon to fill the entire sky and six-inch, jet-black carbonised gum leaves began to flutter down around them.

TikTok: Trump says he will ban Chinese video app in the US

President Donald Trump has announced he is banning the Chinese-owned video-sharing app TikTok in the US.
He told reporters he could sign an executive order as early as Saturday.
US security officials have expressed concern that the app, owned by Chinese firm ByteDance, could be used to collect the personal data of Americans.
TikTok has denied accusations that it is controlled by or shares data with the Chinese government.
