Myanmar soccer player abandons team after World Cup qualifier protest, seeks asylum in Japan

The Japanese are notorious for not granting asylum or refugee status to those who come from countries at war or face imprisonment for their decent against an authoritarian government.    Pyae Lyan Aung will  literally spend years in immigration dentition awaiting the outcome of his application. Which, if past is prolog will be denied no matter the dangers he may face upon his return to Myanmar.  As an example less than 20 people were granted refugee status last year. I can't remember the last time a person was granted asylum.

A trip to Japan for a 2022 World Cup qualifier is going to last much longer than expected for a member of Myanmar's national soccer team.

Pyae Lyan Aung, Myanmar's back-up goalkeeper, has refused to return home and is seeking asylum in Japan, according to the Associated Press. The Japanese government is reportedly considering the request, which occurs amid a turbulent time in Myanmar following a military coup.

Pyae Lyan Aung took part in Myanmar's 10-0 loss against Japan late last month, and drew attention with a three-fingered salute that has become a symbol of opposition to the coup in Myanmar.
