COP26 chief says 'moment of truth' for the planet in last-ditch plea to save troubled climate agreement

Updated 1551 GMT (2351 HKT) November 13, 2021

COP26 President Alok Sharma made an impassioned plea to delegates Saturday to back a draft climate agreement, saying it was a "moment of truth" for the planet as talks went deep into overtime without clear sign that consensus was near.

In an effort to avert failure at the talks, Sharma called on countries to seize the moment, saying negotiations had "reached a critical juncture where we must come together."
He told negotiators that "the world is watching us" and urged them to "reach an agreement here for the sake of our planet and for present and future generations."

Fox News edits video of Biden to make it seem he was being racially insensitive

Fox News edited video of Joe Biden to remove context from remarks some could judge as racially insensitive.

In Veterans Day comments at Arlington National Cemetery on Thursday, Biden told an anecdote that referenced the baseball player Satchel Paige, who pitched in the Negro Leagues before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball.

Biden’s remarks were featured on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show on Thursday night, when the primetime host said the president had “one of his most disturbing, troubling moments to date”.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has not been seen in public for more than a month, the latest absence in a series of breaks this year and sparking new rumours of possible ill health.

This is the longest Mr Jong-un has remained out of public view and activities since 2014, a six-week absence that ended with him returning with the addition of a walking stick.

The North Korean leader was last seen in state media reports on 12 October, which detailed his attendance at a missile exhibition in Pyongyang the day before. Since then there have been no media reports involving Mr Jong-un making a public appearance.

'This is discrimination:' Challenges of being an athlete from Kosovo

Many Kosovar athletes are world famous and win international competitions, but politics can prevent them from competing. Such obstacles have had a huge effect on their career aspirations and earning potential.

Kosovar amateur boxer Bashkim Bajoku, 19, has won five national boxing competitions at home and two in Albania. This past May in Zagreb, he also won the Balkan Boxing Championship title in the 52-kilogram category.

But none of those achievements mattered when he tried to participate in the World Boxing Championships in the Serbian capital of Belgrade at the end of October. It only mattered that he comes from Kosovo.

Bajoku was one of multiple Kosovar boxers who were turned away at the Serbian border for wearing national symbols on their uniforms, which prevented them from competing in the event.

Tigray conflict: Once a trusted Western ally, Ethiopia becomes a strategic headache

As the battle between Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government and rebels from the Tigray region continues, tensions are growing between Washington and its Ethiopian former ally. The Biden administration is now considering imposing sanctions against Addis Ababa, once considered a strategic and trustworthy partner in an unstable East Africa.

The situation in Ethiopia continues to deteriorate amid ongoing fighting between pro-government forces and Tigrayan rebels. As Tigrayan forces gained the upper hand in recent weeks and are now closing in on the capital, the federal government has launched a campaign against any international organisations still active in the country, including the United Nations, accusing them of collaborating with the enemy. The government ordered the expulsion of seven UN agency officials accused of "interference" on September 30.

The UN announced on Wednesday that 72 of its World Food Programme (WFP) drivers were being held in a northern town on the only road leading into Tigray, which is facing a severe threat of famine. The day before (November 9), at least 16 Ethiopian UN employees were arrested in the capital Addis Ababa.

Rights groups decry Poland’s ban on media at Belarus border

Poland denies journalists access to border with Belarus as thousands of people remain stranded amid a geopolitical row.

Human rights groups have condemned Poland’s government for continuing to ban journalists, lawyers, and aid workers from accessing the country’s border with Belarus, as thousands of migrants and refugees have gathered on the Belarusian side hoping to cross into Poland.

For two months now, no media professionals have been able to access the Polish side of the border. As media attention intensified this week on the escalating geopolitical dispute, journalists were still unable to approach the Polish border fences.

Polish media as well as Reporters Without Borders, which has called the restrictions “arbitrary and disproportionate,” are calling for the ban on media presence to be lifted in order for accurate and transparent information to be relayed from the area.
