Millions suffering in deadly pollution ‘sacrifice zones’, warns UN expert

Businesses blamed for rise of toxic hotspots hitting poor communities hardest

 Environment correspondent

A UN expert has warned of the creation of pollution “sacrifice zones” across the world, where tens of millions of people are suffering strokes, cancers, respiratory problems and heart disease as a result of toxic contamination of the environment.

“There are sacrifice zones all over the world, in every region: in the north, in the south, in the east, in the west, in rich countries, in poor countries,” David Boyd told the Guardian.

Boyd, the special rapporteur on human rights and the environment, cited physical health issues, including cancer, heart disease, respiratory illness, strokes and reproductive health problems, as well as “incredible mental health problems associated with living in these places because people feel exploited, they feel stigmatised”.

VOGUE MAGAZINE CONDEMNED FOR EDITING OUT PALESTINE FROM GIGI HADID INSTAGRAM POST

The fashion magazine faces backlash for the repeated editing of the social media post regarding the supermodel

Social media users have criticised Vogue magazine after it edited a reference to Palestine out of an Instagram post in which model Gigi Hadid pledged to donate all of her Fashion Month earnings to people in Ukraine and Palestine.

The furore has led some readers of the fashion magazine to question its motivation in selecting and removing key words from a recent social media post.

On Sunday, the 26-year-old model, who has Palestinian-Dutch heritage, announced on Instagram that she would give away the entirety of her income from her A/W 2022 shows to “aid those suffering from the Ukraine war, as well as continuing to support those experiencing the same in Palestine.”

Can China broker peace between Russia and Ukraine?

While Western leaders hope China will play a more active role in mediating between Russia and Ukraine, experts say it's unlikely that Beijing will jeopardize its warming ties with Moscow.

As the war in Ukraine continues, the international community is desperately trying to find a way to facilitate peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. The two sides have held three rounds of talks so far, but no long-term results have come out of these negotiations.

Many countries have repeatedly looked to China to help facilitate more meaningful negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv, but Beijing hasn't offered any clear signal about whether it is willing to get more involved in the unfolding crisis in Ukraine or not.

Modi's party retains Indian mega-state

A firebrand monk and poster boy of Hindu nationalism retained power in India's most populous state Thursday, in a triumph for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling party.

Partial results gave the BJP 202 seats, a majority in the Uttar Pradesh state parliament, the election commission website showed. The part was also leading in 53 of the 99 still to declare.

The victory strengthens local BJP chief Yogi Adityanath's chances of eventually succeeding Modi as an even more divisive prime minister of the world's largest democracy.

UK freezes assets of Abramovich, six other Russian oligarchs

The UK government hits seven Russian oligarchs with an assets freeze and travel ban because of their link to Putin.

Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich has been hit with an assets freeze and travel ban as part of new UK government sanctions targeting seven Russian oligarchs.

Among others sanctioned are leading industrialist Oleg Deripaska, Rosneft chief executive Igor Sechin and the head of Gazprom Alexey Miller, the government announced on Thursday.

Speculation has swirled for weeks about whether Abramovich would be included in the targeted action against Russian billionaires perceived to be close to the Kremlin.

Abramovich announced last week that he was selling Chelsea, after buying the English Premier League side in 2003 and bankrolling its successes at the domestic and European level.
