Nearly 900,000 people have fled Ukraine - UN The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) says 874,026 people have left Ukraine since Russia launched its invasion last Thursday.
Poland has received more than half that total, it says.
The UNHCR has appealed for nearly $2bn (£1.5bn) for its relief operation – but says its original prediction that up to four million Ukrainians could end up fleeing the country might be an underestimate.
'I've never been that scared in my life'
Russia says it’s seized control of the port of Kherson in southern Ukraine, although that is disputed by the city’s mayor.
Earlier today Hussain, who lives there with his wife and three-year-old daughter, posted a video of tanks outside his apartment, 10 metres away from his balcony.
He tells BBC News that Russian soldiers have been firing warning shots in the air and he's seen people running away in the streets, describing it as “terrifying”.
He says he's never been that scared in his life.
World leaders agree to draw up ‘historic’ treaty on plastic waste UN environment assembly resolution is being hailed as biggest climate deal since Paris 2015
Wed 2 Mar 2022 15.59 GMT
World leaders , environment ministers and other representatives from 173 countries have agreed to develop a legally binding treaty on plastics, in what many described a truly historic moment.
The resolution, agreed at the UN environment assembly in Nairobi, Kenya, calls for a treaty covering the “full lifecycle” of plastics from production to disposal, to be negotiated over the next two years. It has been described by the head of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) as the most important multilateral environmental deal since the Paris climate accord in 2015.
“Against the backdrop of geopolitical turmoil, the UN environment assembly shows multilateral cooperation at its best,” said Espen Barth Eide, the president of UNEA-5 and Norway’s minister for climate and the environment. “Plastic pollution has grown into an epidemic. With today’s resolution we are officially on track for a cure.”

Cancelling Russian Grand Prix made no sense, says Ecclestone The decision to cancel the Russian Grand Prix due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine "does not make sense", former Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone told AFP on Wednesday.
The race scheduled for September 25 in Sochi -- the final year the city was due to host the race before it moves to Saint Petersburg -- was cancelled by Formula One last Friday.
Ecclestone, who over several decades transformed the sport into a global multi-billion-dollar commercial giant, said he did not understand how the FIA reached its decision.
Ecclestone was pivotal to F1 heading to Russia, with the Black Sea resort of Sochi first hosting the race in 2014.
"It does not make sense whichever way you look at," he told AFP by phone. "There is no war in Russia to my knowledge so if it took place it would make no difference to anybody.
Relatives of Sri Lankan detainee who died at immigration center to sue gov't
Relatives of a Sri Lankan woman who died last year while detained at a central Japan immigration center will file a damages suit against the Japanese government later this week, a source familiar with the matter said Tuesday.
The suit to be brought in the Nagoya District Court possibly Friday by the family of Ratnayake Liyanage Wishma Sandamali, 33, will follow a criminal complaint they filed in November against senior officials of the Nagoya Regional Immigration Services Bureau for causing her death by lack of medical care.
Wishma, who arrived in Japan in 2017 on a student visa, was taken to the facility in August 2020 after overstaying her visa. She died on March 6 last year while in custody after complaining for more than a month of symptoms including stomach pain.

"The Russian army is overextended and in a precarious position if Ukraine becomes a protracted war," Seth Jones, vice president of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington, DC-based think tank, said in a social media post.
"Assuming 150,000 Russian soldiers in Ukraine and a population of 44 million, that is a force ratio of 3.4 soldiers per 1,000 people. You can't hold territory with those numbers," Jones said.
