The war in maps: Track the latest developments

As we've been reporting, Ukrainian forces have regained control of large areas around the capital, Kyiv, as Russian forces withdraw and refocus their efforts on operations in the east of the country.

Here are a few of our latest maps visualising the conflict.

BREAKINGPutin should face war crimes trial - Biden

US President Biden has again labelled Vladimir Putin a war criminal – and has called for the Russian leader to face trial over the killings in Bucha.

As we’ve been reporting, the bodies of civilians have been found strewn on the streets there. Our reporter in the town has been to the basement of a house where five bodies were found - men with their hands bound who appeared to have been shot dead.

Biden says he’s also seeking more sanctions against Russia over the atrocities, which Moscow denies its troops carried out.

The US president previously caused outrage in Moscow when he first accused Putin of war crimes last month.

IPCC report: ‘now or never’ if world is to stave off climate disaster

Greenhouse gas emissions must peak by 2025, say climate scientists in what is in effect their final warning

 Environment correspondent

The world can still hope to stave off the worst ravages of climate breakdown but only through a “now or never” dash to a low-carbon economy and society, scientists have said in what is in effect a final warning for governments on the climate.

Greenhouse gas emissions must peak by 2025, and can be nearly halved this decade, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), to give the world a chance of limiting future heating to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.

The final cost of doing so will be minimal, amounting to just a few percent of global GDP by mid-century, though it will require a massive effort by governments, businesses and individuals.

Outside the Jewish Community Center in the Polish city of Krakow, more than a dozen members wait to greet their guest of honor as snow falls.

A yellow ambulance arrives and 82-year-old Margaryta Zatuchna, slight of frame with thick round glasses and a never-ending smile, steps out. She is handed two bouquets of roses, one orange and the other white.
She bows her head slightly and inhales deeply to smell each bunch. She is finally safe.

US seizes yacht owned by oligarch with close ties to Putin

The U.S. government seized a mega yacht in Spain owned by an oligarch with close ties to the Russian president on Monday, the first in the government’s sanctions initiative to “seize and freeze” giant boats and other pricey assets of Russian elites.

Spain's Civil Guard and U.S. federal agents descended on the yacht at the Marina Real in the port of Palma de Mallorca, the capital of Spain’s Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea. Associated Press reporters at the scene saw police going in and out of the boat on Monday morning.

The joint operation to seize the yacht, with Spain's Civil Guard, the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations, was carried out at the request of U.S. authorities, the Civil Guard said.
