Exclusive: FIFA rebuffs Zelensky’s request to share message of peace at World Cup final

Updated 8:04 AM EST, Fri December 16, 2022

A request by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to share a message of world peace prior to kickoff at the World Cup final on Sunday has been rebuffed by FIFA, a source told CNN.

The source said Zelensky’s office is offering to appear in a video link to fans in the stadium in Qatar, ahead of the game and was surprised by the negative response. It’s unclear if Zelensky’s message would be live, or taped.

“We thought FIFA wanted to use its platform for the greater good,” the source said.

Nobel prize winner criticises western ‘neglect’ and urges action over DRC violence

Denis Mukwege has demanded sanctions be imposed on Rwanda to ease the crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo

The west must ditch its “double standards” and act decisively against the violence worsening in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Dr Denis Mukwege, the Nobel prize-winning surgeon, has said.

In a stinging criticism of the international community’s “negligence”, Mukwege urged Britain and its allies to impose sanctions on neighbouring Rwanda to help ease the growing crisis in the east of the country.

Kigali has been accused by the UN of supporting the M23 rebel militia, which returned to the fray in November 2021 after years of lying dormant and has since seized a swathe of territory in eastern DRC. Rwanda denies the claim.

India: Families of migrants who died in Qatar seek answers

Mammai Bhoo Laxmi's husband went to Qatar to work on its FIFA World Cup infrastructure as a construction worker. Within one week of arriving, he was reported dead.

Eight years have passed since Mammai Bhoo Laxmi — a resident of Humnapur village in the south Indian state of Telangana — last heard from her husband Mammai Laxman.

He had called her from the airport right before he boarded his flight to Qatar in 2014, and promised to call her again once he obtained a local number. He was flying to Qatar to work as a mason. But Laxmi never heard from her husband again.

About a month later, Laxmi heard news of his death. Laxman died within his first week in Qatar. He is believed to be one of the 6,500 migrant workers who have died in Qatar since 2010 while working on projects related to the FIFA World Cup 2022.

AFP looks back at a rollercoaster two months at the Silicon Valley giant.

Enter Elon

"Let the good times roll," he tweets after the deal is sealed on October 28. He becomes the sole director of the company after dissolving its corporate board.

ANALYSIS North Korea's latest weapons test aims to undermine kill chain system

By Jung Min-ho

North Korea has tested a high-thrust solid-fuel motor that analysts say could allow quicker and harder-to-detect launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) with the apparent aim of undermining ― and ultimately incapacitating ― South Korea and the U.S.' anti-missile system.

The missile engine test, which was conducted Thursday under the supervision of leader Kim Jong-un, provided a "scientific and technological guarantee for the development of another new type strategic weapon system," the official Korean Central News Agency claimed Friday.

Kim praised the success of the test, saying he expects a new strategic weapon to be built "in the shortest span of time," the broadcaster reported.

By Bernd Debusmann Jr
BBC News, Washington

More than a third of executions in the US this year were botched or highly problematic, according to a new report.

The Death Penalty Information Center (DPIC) said seven of 20 execution attempts were visibly problematic or took an inordinate amount of time.

In one incident, executioners in Alabama took three hours to set an IV line in what was the longest lethal injection in US history.

A total of 18 people were executed in six states throughout the year.
