‘Ridiculous’: Greta Thunberg blasts decision to let UAE oil boss chair climate talks

Climate activist at Davos says lobbyists have been influencing conferences ‘since forever’

Four years after taking the World Economic Forum by storm, Greta Thunberg returned to Davos on Thursday to blast the United Arab Emirates for appointing the head of its state-owned oil company to chair the Cop28 climate talks later this year.

Thunberg said it was “completely ridiculous” that Sultan Ahmed al-Jaber, chief executive of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), will preside over the next round of global climate talks in Dubai in November.

She told an event on the sidelines of the WEF’s annual meeting in Davos that lobbyists have been influencing these conferences “since, basically, forever”.

German parliament recognizes Yazidi 'genocide' in Iraq

The German Bundestag recognized the massacre of Yazidis by jihadists from the so-called Islamic State in Iraq as "genocide."

Germany's lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, recognized on Thursday the 2014 massacre of Yazidis by Islamic State (IS) group jihadists in Iraq as a "genocide," and called for measures to assist the besieged minority.

In a move hailed by Yazidi community representatives, deputies in the Bundestag passed the motion by the three parliamentary groups in Germany's ruling centre-left-led coalition and conservative members of parliament.

The Bundestag "recognizes the crimes against the Yazidi community as genocide, following the legal evaluations of investigators from the United Nations," the resolution said, after similar moves by countries including Australia, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Iranian medical staff face death threats, arrest and interrogation for treating injured protesters

Iranian medical personnel are being pressured to lie about the causes of injuries or deaths of protesters attacked by Islamic Republic security forces. They have been arrested, interrogated, beaten and, in one case, allegedly killed for treating injured protesters in secret, as doctors and activists in Iran told the FRANCE 24 Observers team.

After four months of protests in Iran, the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran's forces continue to crack down on medical personnel.

The protests began with outrage followng the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini after being arrested by the morality police for “improperly” wearing her hijab.

After weeks of violent protests, what is happening in Peru?

Supporters of former President Pedro Castillo calling for his successor’s resignation are taking their protest to Lima.

Thousands of protesters in Peru have converged in the capital Lima to show support for ousted former President Pedro Castillo and to demand the resignation of current President Dina Boluarte.

The mass demonstrations on Thursday aim to keep up the pressure against the government, with protesters also calling for the dissolution of parliament and fresh elections.

Counterprotests already under way are rejecting those demands, a sign of divisions wracking the country.

Jacinda Ardern’s resignation shows burnout is real – and it’s nothing to be ashamed of

Updated 7:33 AM EST, Thu January 19, 2023

Burnout is real – and it’s nothing to be ashamed of. That’s the conclusion trailblazing New Zealand leader Jacinda Ardern seems to have reached after almost six brutal years in office.

The soon-to-be-former prime minister, who announced her resignation Thursday, said the decision to stand down came during a reflective summer in the southern hemisphere. And with an election looming this October, she saw no need to prolong her departure.

“I had hoped that I would find what I needed to carry on over that period. But unfortunately, I haven’t, and I would be doing a disservice to New Zealand to continue,” she said.
