Turkey earthquake: 113 arrest warrants connected to building construction

By Tom Bateman and Laura Gozzi
BBC News, Hatay and London

Officials in Turkey say 113 arrest warrants have been issued in connection with the construction of buildings that collapsed in Monday's earthquake.

Turkish police have already taken at least 12 people into custody, including building contractors.

Meanwhile, unrest in southern Turkey has disrupted rescue efforts in some places.

The number of people confirmed to have died in Turkey and Syria has risen to more than 30,000.

More arrests are expected - but the action will be seen by many as an attempt to divert overall blame for the disaster.

Iran has used boats and a state-owned airline to smuggle new types of advanced long-range armed drones to Russia for use in its war on Ukraine, sources inside the Middle Eastern country have revealed.

At least 18 of the drones were delivered to Vladimir Putin’s navy after Russian officers and technicians made a special visit to Tehran in November, where they were shown a full range of Iran’s technologies.

On that occasion, the 10-man Russian delegation selected six Mohajer-6 drones, which have a range of around 200km and carry two missiles under each wing, along with 12 Shahed 191 and 129 drones, which also have an air-to-ground strike capability.

Lithium BonanzaChina Battles West for Raw Material of the Future

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is home to perhaps the largest lithium deposit in the world. China is eagerly trying to get its hands on the valuable resource, but the concession is controlled by an Australian company. Work-hungry locals are hoping the conflict will soon be resolved.

The ceiling panels in the Manono community center are disintegrating. A crack runs through the cement floor, diagonally across the room. There is also no electricity, though event organizers have set up a generator outside for the large speakers and microphones. But most of the meeting participants don’t really need any technical assistance as they loudly share their points of view.

In the faded Grande Salle of Manono, a small town in the Democratic Republic of Congo located a two-day drive from the nearest big city, the focus is on global politics. The question is: Who should be allowed access to the minerals of the future located in the earth below their feet? "The Chinese," or "the people from the West?"

'It is my duty to give back,' says foreign student helping quake survivors in Turkey

Nearly a week after the deadly earthquake in southern Turkey, foreign students Abdelaziz, Ahmed Ali, Yassir and Mustafa are helping survivors of the quake in the city of Gaziantep. They say they are happy to give back to the country that has given them so much, and that they have fallen in love with.

"It is my duty to help others in this ordeal," says Ahmed Ali, who did not even stop to think before reaching out to help the community. After the earthquake hit Gaziantep on February 6, the 25-year-old Egyptian, who had just graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering, immediately contacted his friends, who are also foreign students. Their goal? To help those in any way they could who have now lost everything.

"Some [of the volunteers] come from Egypt, others from JordanSyria or Iraq," says Abdelaziz, a 23-year-old Palestinian mechanical engineering student. "After the earthquake, we decided we would help everyone

Bolsonaro considering return to Brazil in 'coming weeks'

Ex-Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is mulling a return to his home country where he is the subject of several investigations.

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has said that he plans to return to Brazil "in the coming weeks,'' after being in the United States for over a month.

The far-right politician had flown to Florida two days before incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was sworn in as Brazil's new president on January 1.

"There is no place like home ... We know Brazil is a fantastic country," Bolsonaro said at a gathering of Brazilians in Boca Raton, in a video posted online by broadcaster CNN on Saturday.

‘Just to survive’: Wagner fighters recount the horrors of battle in eastern Ukraine

Published 3:49 AM EST, Sun February 12, 2023

Two former fighters of the Russian private military company Wagner have told CNN of their horrific experiences on the battlefield in eastern Ukraine, and how anyone who faltered was immediately shot by their own commanders.

The two fighters were captured by Ukrainian forces late last year. CNN is not disclosing their identities for their own safety. Both are married with children and were recruited while in prison. One was serving a 20-year sentence for manslaughter.

For security reasons, the Ukrainians kept a presence in the room where the interview took place. CNN told the fighters that they could end the interview at any time they wished. But they spoke in detail for more than an hour.
