Hospitals have been shelled in Sudan as fighting between rival armed factions continues for a third day, doctors say.

Patients in the capital, Khartoum, have appealed for safe passage as gun battles rage in the city.

Violence between the army and a paramilitary group called the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has left around 100 people dead, a doctors' union said.

Both sides claimed to control key sites in Khartoum, where residents sheltered from explosions.

The Sudan Doctors' Trade Union says there has been severe damage to al-Shab Teaching Hospital in Khartoum, along with two other hospitals, caused by clashes and "mutual shelling". It called the attacks a violation of international law.

Penny Wong and Paul Keating spar as minister warns against ‘frenzied’ Taiwan war speculation

Wong also hits back at former prime minister saying his comments diminish ‘his legacy and the subject matter’

Penny Wong has warned politicians and media against playing “the most dangerous of parlour games” by adding to “frenzied” speculation about a war over Taiwan.

The Australian foreign affairs minister said on Monday that such a conflict would be “catastrophic for all” and there would be “no real winners” – but the warning was quickly overshadowed by a fresh war of words with Paul Keating.

Wong hit back at the former Labor prime minister, who ridiculed the minister for “running around the Pacific islands with a lei around [her] neck handing out money”.

‘Russia will be free’: Defiant Kremlin critic jailed for 25 years after denouncing Ukraine invasion

UK among those to call for the immediate release of Vladimir Kara-Murza, a dual Russian-British citizen

Chris Stevenson

Opposition activist Vladimir Kara-Murza has been sentenced to 25 years in prison by a Russian court over charges linked to his criticism of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, sparking outrage from the UK – which has called for his immediate release – and other Western leaders.

Mr Kara-Murza, 41, a father of three who holds Russian and British passports, has spent years speaking out against President Vladimir Putin and lobbied Western governments to impose sanctions on Russia for purported human rights violations.

It is one of the longest sentences handed to a political opponent of Mr Putin, and is one of a number of recent high-profile cases as the Kremlin seeks to crack down on dissent. The judgment, handed down in a behind-closed-doors trial, is the maximum possible for a person without previous convictions under Russian law.

US armored vehicles crash on autobahn in Bavaria — reports

The Mittelbayerische daily cited German police as saying that several soldiers were injured in the highway collision that involved four US military vehicles.

A US Army convoy was involved in a road accident on the autobahn on Monday, German media reported.

The crash occurred at 11 a.m. local time (0900 UTC/GMT) along the A6 highway in the southeastern state of Bavaria.

Police suspect that a braking maneuver in traffic could have been the cause of the incident, according to Bavarian daily Mittelbayerische.

Four US Army vehicles were involved in the collision. Three of the four vehicles are no longer roadworthy and must be towed, the paper cited police as saying.

Hunters in Lebanon use automatic rifles to gun down dozens of rare birds ‘for fun’

People hunting for sport in northern Lebanon used automatic rifles to massacre dozens of rare wild birds traveling through the region on their migration route to Europe. Lebanese animal rights activists have denounced the cruelty of these hunters who slaughter these protected species with total impunity “for fun".

Videos filmed in the Akkar region of northern Lebanon show people using “military weapons” to slaughter dozens of rare migratory birds. Our Observers say the weapons included M16s and AK-47 Kalashnikovs. The videos were posted online on April 9 and 10.

Air pollution impacts every stage of human life, report finds

From foetal development to dementia, 10 years of studies show the adverse impact of air pollution.

Air pollution impacts every stage of human life from foetal development and the cognitive abilities of teenagers to adult mental health, according to a report that synthesises the findings of more than 35,000 studies from around the world.

The Environmental Research Group at Imperial College London published the review on Monday of a decade of scientific studies into air pollution.

The London university team looked at findings from the World Health Organization (WHO), the UK Committee on the Medical Effects of Air Pollution, the Royal College of Physicians, the Health Effects Institute and the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is now so huge and permanent that a coastal ecosystem is thriving on it, scientists say

Scientists have found thriving communities of coastal creatures, including tiny crabs and anemones, living thousands of miles from their original home on plastic debris in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch – a 620,000 square mile swirl of trash in the ocean between California and Hawaii.

In a new study published in the Nature Ecology & Evolution journal on Monday, a team of researchers revealed that dozens of species of coastal invertebrate organisms have been able to survive and reproduce on plastic garbage that’s been floating in the ocean for years.

The scientists said that the findings suggest plastic pollution in the ocean might be enabling the creation of new floating ecosystems of species that are not normally able to survive in the open ocean.
