Dozens of leaked documents revealed US assessments of the war in Ukraine as well as sensitive secrets about American allies.

BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner examines the implications of the leak.

Alexei Navalny, Russia’s most prominent opposition politician, has been grappling with severe stomach pain in jail that could be the result of slow-acting poison, a close ally said on Friday.

Taiwan: Baerbock, Macron comments raise questions on EU ties

First, France's Macron said Europe shouldn't follow the US on Taiwan. Then, Germany's top diplomat said France's China policy reflected the policy of the EU as a whole. How are these comments seen in Taiwan?

France's Emmanuel Macron has prompted backlash by saying that Europeans should not be "followers" of either US or China when it comes to Taiwan and urging for more EU autonomy in international policy.

His statements came as China was conducting a massive three-day military drill around the self-ruled island, which Beijing sees as a part of its own territory. On Wednesday, Macron said he was standing by his comments and that "being an ally does not mean being a vassal" of the US. At the same time, he emphasized that France supported "the status quo in Taiwan" and was in favor of solving the situation peacefully.

Then, Germany's Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock tried to present a united front during a visit to China. Baerbock said that Macron's response to criticism "once again emphasized that France's China policies reflected EU China policies one-to-one." While she did not clarify where Berlin stood on issue of the EU's autonomy from the US, Baerbock said EU nations "pursue common strategic approaches," and she focused on the economic dangers of a conflict in the Taiwan Strait.

Death toll climbs to at least 170 in Myanmar junta air strike on village

The death toll from an air strike on a central Myanmar village rose to an estimated 171 victims on Friday, according to a team member involved in cremating bodies and media reports.

Myanmar has been in crisis since the military toppled Aung San Suu Kyi's civilian government in a February 2021 coup, with an estimated 3,200 civilians killed as part of the junta's crackdown on dissent.

There is no official death toll from Tuesday morning's strike on Pazi Gyi village in the central Sagaing region, although military authorities confirmed they had carried out an operation in the area.

A villager involved in cremating the bodies, who asked not to be identified to protect his safety, said on Friday his team had revised its death count up to 171 from 130 a day earlier.

Gold mafia helped Gupta brothers in South Africa state capture

Al Jazeera investigation reveals a well-known money launderer as a previously missing link in the Gupta state capture.

One of South Africa’s biggest money launderers was behind three companies that played a key role in the country’s state capture by the controversial Gupta brothers under former President Jacob Zuma, Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit (I-Unit) has found.

The three companies, Varlozone, Zokubyte and Coral General Traders, were identified by the Zondo Commission — an investigation set up by the South African government — as conduits used for fraud and the capture of state funds by a small group of South African politicians and businessmen.

China sanctions U.S. Congress member for Taiwan visit

By HUIZHONG WU

China has sanctioned a United States lawmaker for his visit to Taiwan, saying he violated the “One China” principle that says Beijing has sovereignty over the island.

The mainland’s ruling Communist Party says Taiwan, which split from the mainland in 1949 amid a civil war, must be reunited with China by force if necessary. Beijing says Taipei has no right to conduct foreign relations and views visits by U.S. lawmakers to the island as violating its claims of sovereignty.

The sanctions against Rep Michael McCaul include freezing his assets and properties in China, prohibiting any organization or individual in China from conducting transactions or working with him, and denying him a visa to enter the country, according to a statement from China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
