WATCH: Israeli far right sees victory as ‘ultimate annihilation of Gaza’

Israel’s war on Gaza rages on with the death toll at more than 35,000 Palestinians and climbing.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government is facing growing internal friction over the way forward in the war. Many of the coalition’s far-right members have urged the prime minister to ignore growing international pressure to rein in Israel’s onslaught on the territory.

Tensions are also rising among the Israeli public with citizens taking to the streets to protest against Netanyahu’s policies and demand his resignation.

So what lies ahead for the country’s leadership?

Economic damage from climate change six times worse than thought – report

A 1C increase in global temperature leads to a 12% decline in world gross domestic product, researchers have found

The economic damage wrought by climate change is six times worse than previously thought, with global heating set to shrink wealth at a rate consistent with the level of financial losses of a continuing permanent war, research has found.

A 1C increase in global temperature leads to a 12% decline in world gross domestic product (GDP), the researchers found, a far higher estimate than that of previous analyses. The world has already warmed by more than 1C (1.8F) since pre-industrial times and many climate scientists predict a 3C (5.4F) rise will occur by the end of this century due to the ongoing burning of fossil fuels, a scenario that the new working paper, yet to be peer-reviewed, states will come with an enormous economic cost.

Will Israel be banned from football?

At the FIFA congress in Bangkok, the awarding of the 2027 Women's World Cup to Brazil was overshadowed by calls to ban Israel from world football.

What happened?

At the FIFA Congress in Bangkok, the president of the Palestinian Football Association (PFA), Jibril Rajoub, asked football's world governing body to suspend Israel and ban Israeli teams from FIFA events. Rajoub, who stated in March that he would bring the matter to the Congress' attention, said Israel had violated multiple FIFA statutes, including over the Gaza conflict and the inclusion in Israeli leagues of teams located in Palestinian territory.

"FIFA cannot afford to remain indifferent to these violations or the ongoing genocide in Palestine," he said. "I ask you to stand on the right side of history... If not now, when?"

Rajoub had hoped there would be an immediate vote on a possible ban, which has the support of the Asian Football Confederation, of which it is a member.

In Mr Modi's constituency in the northern city of Varanasi, saree weaver Shiv Johri Patel says he's got many worries - but he's clear who's getting his vote.

"Mr Modi has done great work. We haven't seen poor people getting so many welfare benefits under any other government," he says.
