Israel orders Rafah evacuation as Gaza truce talks stall

Blaming Hamas for deadlocked negotiations, Israel appears set to launch threatened offensive on southern Gaza city.

The Israeli army appears set to launch its long-threatened assault on Rafah as it instructs Palestinians to leave parts of the city in southern Gaza.

Israeli forces called on Monday for people in Rafah, into which huge numbers of displaced Palestinians were previously pushed, to evacuate to “an expanded humanitarian area”. The move came as Israel and Hamas blamed one another for a breakdown in truce negotiations.

The Israeli military said in social media posts that it “encourages” residents in eastern Rafah to move to an area in al-Mawasi refugee camp, located by the Mediterranean west of Khan Younis.

Female journalists under attack as press freedom falters

Physical and online abuse, detentions, deportations and sexual violence – a global crackdown on women in journalism is intensifying

Female journalists are at the “epicentre of risk” as attacks on press freedom intensify around the world.

According to organisations representing women in journalism, the past year has seen an escalation of smear campaigns; racist and gendered attacks; detentions; deportations; censorship; and police violence levelled at female journalists, which is leading to a “chilling” silencing of women’s voices in the media landscape.

Germany recalls envoy to Russia over cyberattack

Germany has temporarily recalled its ambassador to Moscow after members of the ruling party were targeted in what Berlin said was a state-sponsored Russian cyberattack.

The German ambassador to Russia was recalled for consultations on Monday after Berlin accused Moscow of carrying out cyberattacks.

Targets of the campaign included members of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's center-left Social Democrats.

What does the recall mean?

In line with protocol, a spokesperson said, Ambassador Alexander Graf Lambsdorff is to return to Berlin on a temporary basis.

A Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Lambsdorff had "been called back for consultations and will stay in Berlin for a week and then return to Moscow."

IAEA chief arrives in Iran to ‘negotiate with top nuclear officials'

UN atomic watchdog chief Rafael Grossi arrived in Iran Monday, where he is expected to speak at a conference and meet officials for talks on Tehran's nuclear programme.

The visit comes at a time of heightened regional tensions and with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) criticising Iran for lack of cooperation on inspections and other outstanding issues.

Grossi "arrived in Tehran on Monday noon at the head of a delegation to participate in the nuclear conference and negotiate with top nuclear and political officials of the country," news agencies reported.

He is scheduled to meet Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and Atomic Energy Organization of Iran chief Mohammad Eslami.

An Indian woman accused her husband of forcing her to have ‘unnatural sex.’ A judge said that’s not a crime in marriage

An Indian judge has dismissed a woman’s complaint that her husband committed “unnatural sex,” because under Indian law it’s not illegal for a husband to force his wife to engage in sexual acts.

The ruling, made in the Madhya Pradesh High Court last week, shines a light on a legal loophole in India that doesn’t criminalize marital rape by a husband against his wife, if she’s over age 18.

Campaigners have been trying to change the law for years, but they say they’re up against conservatives who argue that state interference could destroy the tradition of marriage in India.

Over the past seven decades he has documented everything from the Aberfan disaster to the Beatles at the height of Beatlemania.

In the '70s he set up Newport’s prestigious School of Documentary Photography, producing scores of photographers.
