Ethnic cleansing feared as Trump asks Jordan, Egypt to take Gaza residents

Trump says relocation may be temporary or long-term as he also announces lifting of hold on 2,000-pound bombs for Israel.

United States President Donald Trump says he would like to “just clean out” Gaza, urging Egypt and Jordan to take in more Palestinians from the coastal enclave.

Speaking with reporters on board Air Force One on Saturday, Trump said he had a call earlier in the day with King Abdullah II of Jordan and would speak with Egypt President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi later on Sunday.

South Korea’s prosecutors indicted the impeached president, Yoon Suk Yeol, on Sunday on charges of leading an insurrection with his short-lived imposition of martial law on 3 December, the main opposition party said.

The charges are unprecedented for a South Korean president, and if convicted, Yoon could face years in prison for his shock martial law decree, which sought to ban political and parliamentary activity and control the media.

His move set off a wave of political upheaval in Asia’s fourth-largest economy, a top US ally, with the prime minister also impeached and suspended from power and a number of top military officials indicted for their roles in the alleged insurrection.

Ireland: Sinn Féin fail to make breakthrough

Little more than a year ago, Sinn Féin were hoping to take power. But in November’s vote, their support slumped: they now face another term in opposition to work out what went wrong.

In February 2015 Sinn Féin’s national chairperson Declan Kearney hailed Syriza’s coming to power in Greece and Podemos’s electoral advances in Spain as manifestations of ‘an ideological war that has engulfed Irish society and which stretches across Western Europe and the Americas’. Speaking at Sinn Féin’s party conference a month later, Syriza politician Euclid Tsakalotos had a similar message: ‘Syriza, Sinn Féin, Podemos and others are part of a great realignment in European politics’.

Sudan: Attack on hospital kills 70, says WHO chief

The African country is gripped by a civil war between the army and rebel forces. The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced more than 12 million.

A drone attack on the only functional hospital in the western Sudanese city of El Fasher has killed about 70 people and injured 19, World Health Organization (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Sunday.

"The attack comes at a time when access to health care is already severely constrained in the state due to the closure of health facilities following intense bombardments," he said in a post on X.

DR Congo severs ties with Rwanda as M23 rebel group closes in on Goma

The Democratic Republic of the Congo cut off diplomatic ties with Rwanda on Sunday as the rebel group M23, believed to be backed by Kigali, closed in on the eastern city of Goma.

Congo severed diplomatic ties with Rwanda as fighting between Rwanda-backed rebels and government forces raged around the key eastern city of Goma, leaving at least 13 peacekeepers and foreign soldiers dead and displacing thousands of civilians.

The M23 rebel group has made significant territorial gains along the border with Rwanda in recent weeks, closing in on Goma, the provincial capital of around 2 million people and a regional hub for security and humanitarian efforts.

Japan will not take part in a U.N. nuclear weapons ban treaty conference in New York in March as an observer, said Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, overriding calls from a key political partner as well as hibakusha.

Instead, Ishiba told senior government officials Jan. 25 that he intends to send lawmakers from the ruling coalition of the Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito to the third meeting of signatories to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons without official observer status.

Komeito has called for Japan’s participation as an observer, but Ishiba remains reluctant to take that step.
